Removing the winter coat for the Summer.

Hey guys,
Listen... what are the wrong ways to remove the black coat from a Basic 9? I have a chance to get a polished 9 from a guy who did the polishing himself. I remember once Busse said that he could not warranty work done on his knives by anyone but him. Because there was no way of knowing if the work was done right and therefore flawed the blade. So does removing the coat mean that the entire blade may now not be covered if the coat is removed? Should a guy buy a knife altered in this way? Just askin. Thanks for any and all help here.
