Removing thumb stud from blade

How are most thumb studs attached? Are they screwed into the blade?

I want to remove the thumb stud on my Benchmade rift. There are 6 small indentations around the perimeter of the stud and looks like Benchmade probably has a tool that engages these and can screw it into the blade if I were to guess. It doesn't look like there would be enough thickness to the blade for both sides of the stud to screw directly to the blade. So do they normally screw into each other and pinch the blade?

I could just try turning them but thought someone might know so I don't risk goofing something up.

Thanks!

I removed my Rifts thumbstud with a tiny (I think 3/16") driver on one side and a similar sized metric socket on the other. I have a Husky 45 piece stubby set that is cheap and had what I need to remove the stud (it unscrews). I did contact Benchmade for a torx thumbstud since I have tons of tiny torx bits in my knife kit and I always remove the stud when sharpening. Benchmade mailed out the thumbstud with no charge and I have it in my knife now. Since I had to send in my M4 Rift for repairs I asked for a torx stud for that one as well. If you plan on sharpening thinner than 14-15 per side on Benchstones it is a must to remove the studs or else you will hit the studs or the G-10 handle near the rear of the blade.
