Removing Tobacco Smell from Ulster Knife

Hello. I have an unusual problem.

I won an eBay auction and one of the items was an old Ulster (114?) pocket knife. My only complaint is that it came with a nauseating tobacco aroma that will make the entire room smell. The knife is not in the best shape, but I would still like to keep it as a long term investment. Any advice on how to get rid of the smell? I know in general one should not submerge this style of knife, but I don't know how else to thoroughly clean it and what exactly to use. I thought brushing it with Hoppe's No. 9 Gun Solvent might help, but I am afraid it will hurt the nickel bolsters. Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I always leave them in the out-house for a week or two -- no more smokey smell..! lol ( u know this is Tn. )

Maybe -- spray it with "Febreze" and wipe off and let it air out for a couple of days.! What my Uncle does.!*

Soak it in detergent with baking soda , rinse , lightly oil . Airing out may be needed too.

Ozone

That is what second hand stores and pawn shops use to make things smell new again.

They are also used in fire restoration. Nothing else gets rid of a fire smell. Ozone works better than anything.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies.

I am probably going to give it a little bit of lemon, thoroughly scrub with baking soda, rinse thoroughly, and dry thoroughly. Like Obsessed with Edges said, I don't want to end up having rust issues, so I'll go easy on the acid.

Thanks again.

A lot of things may mask the smell, which may be enough. If you have scented dryer sheets, wrap the knife in one of those until you can get to the cleaning. Unless you can clean it right away. I received a bicycle stem years ago that smelled of an well used ashtray. Funny how the seller didn't mention the aweful smell in the listing, an claimed she didn't smell anything when she boxed it. Even the box smelled. I didn't bother taking the box into the house. Straight to the garage and the packing went straight into the trash. I doused that thing w/Febrese and kept dousing it over the next couple of days. I then used car wash liquid soap on it and it never smelled again.

Good luck!

i doubt the hoppes would damage the nickel silver, depending on age id be more concerned with the scale material and any solvents
