Removing Verdigris From Sambar Stag?

I have an older Bowie with a Sambar stag handle that has been in storage. Over time it has developed verdigris on the stag. What is a good way to remove it without harming the stag? I have some Renaissance wax to apply once I get it cleaned off. Any help out there?

Is it growing from the brass guard/pommel? It should just wipe off the stag. Does it seem like it soaked into the stag?

No, it has soaked into the stag. I managed to wipe the majority of it off, but it is very stubborn. Hard to get out of the grooves in the stag. I'm wondering what cleaning agent to use on it.

Soap and water + an old toothbrush.
When clean, polish it on a piece of leather and then give it a few drops of foodgrade mineraloil.

If it's deep it's hard to remove and You may well have to live with it.
Hydrogenperoxid 3% can be used to bleach the stain, but it's hard to get it all out.

Thanks for the answers. I'll give it a good scrubbing. I've also been told that Renaissance wax is good for keeping it off once I manage to remove it. Anyone ever use it on stag?

No, just mineraloil is enough.
Linseedoil works too, but mineraloil is the best advice I have seen.

I actually managed to remove 99 per cent of the verdigris by using Hoppe's #9 solvent and a Q-tip. Verdigris must have high copper content. I wiped the handle down thoroughly with water and dried it, and now it is outside in the sun.
