Hi All,

I have this norton stone from home depot. It had been used with WD40, but I want to use water on it instead. Can the WD40 be boiled out of the stone? And if it can how long should I boil it for?

Sorry if this question has been asked before, my searching skills aren't very good.

Thank you.

I wouldn't boil the stone. I would also not recommend using plain water as a lubricant on a Norton India stone. You could try soaking the stone in acetone for a day or so. I use baby oil on my Norton stone as a lubricant and clean it with Borax powdered hand soap, warm water and an old toothbrush. You could use Ajax instead of Borax hand soap.

Boiling takes about 10 minutes. As it starts you will see the oil come out of the stone and when done the oil will be on the surface of the water. It's as easy as it sounds.

I actually don't have the Norton India stone, it's a Norton 6 in. Economy Tool and Knife Sharpener from home depot. But thanks for the advice.

Awesome, Thanks Knifenut1013. The stone is in the pot as I type this. Thanks again.

Let me know how it works. I've been thinking about doing this, but I kind of like the light touch of oil in my stone because it doesn't take long for it to dry (water doesn't soak in deep.)

I boiled mine. Crossed two forks to keep it off the bottom of the pan, let it boil away for about 10-15 minutes, then put it in the sink and slowly added warm water till the pot overflowed. The oil stays on top of the water and washes down the drain, out comes the stone clean and oil free.

I've boiled all my stones with excellent results.

Thanks everyone for taking part in my post. I boiled my stone and now it's nice and fresh.

Thank you all for all your helpful information and tips.
