OK OK

Now that I got your attention, why is Spyderco discontinuing this knife? It looks great, is stong, has a great looking blade and handle, and is going to be my next knife.

Is something wrong with the design or ?

I thought it should be a real winner and looks to be a GREAT tactical knife but never heard it mentioned on these forums, why?

See you guys at the Blade Show

For the sake of showing a diversity of opinion, this is my single least favorite Spyderco ever. Maybe it's the concave shape of the clip-point (always hate those, just my preference), or the nasty way the handle gets all narrow (reminds me of a Vaquero Grande -ugh!). Perhaps it's that the shape and the timing of its release make it seem like a lock-back knockoff of the AFCK that was beaten with an ugly stick. I dunno. For a variety of reasons, I really hate this knife, and won't own one despite the fact that my collection consists entirely of large, tip-down folders with blade holes (how's that for a narrow range?)

If it works for you, that's cool. I just wanted to offer a different point of view. I'm celebrating the death of the Renegade.

My feelings are not as strong as Corduroy's. It is not my favorite Spyderco but it is a good strong knife and made in the US. The cool thing is that you should be able to find one at a really good price wll.

Not only is it a decent knife, and made in the US, but it's also clearly marked as made on EARTH!!!!!!

Does Spyderco have some "extended clientele" that they've never disclosed? Is the "hole" design not of this world? Is Sal an alien? Inquiring minds want to know!

PS If anyone does want a nice plain edge Renegade, I've got a spare one collecting dust, that's nearly NIB.

Well, if the Renegade becomes extinct, the Blackhawk will likely follow. So how many clip point/ bowie folders are there left now??

L8r,
Nakano

PS- I want to see a large clip point bowie blade linerlock folder. BM HAD the right idea with their now discontinued Kodiak Skinner.

I love a good straight clip-point, but the minute that clip gets even a little inward curve I start having this gag reflex. Go figure.

Nakano, I agree with you that we lost a fine knife in the Kodiak, but why don't you count the AFCK as a folding Bowie-style? It's got a very long clip-point, but I don't see anything that disqualifies it from bearing the name. Also, check out the new J.D. Smith offering Spyderco will be releasing in the near(?) future:

That looks pretty Bowie-ish, though I'd like to see a secondary edge on the clip to really make it qualify. I'm using the Bowie term very loosely here because I've never seen it defined well in a more precise sense.

The Renegade is one my favorite Spydercos. Its trim, slim, comfortable, US made, light for its size, has decent blade length w/belly; and before it was discontinued, made the perfect kind of knife that was enjoyable to use but not cry over if lost. It also is/was a good lock back alternative to the plethora of linerlocks in a similar niche.
The Blackhawk, though, isn't/wasn't as inspiring.
The Renegade kind of snuck onto the market a few years ('94 or '95?) ago and intitially didn't seem well publicized. If memorey serves correctly, at the time the AFCK and BM/Emerson CQC7 (they were advertised together)probably grabed all the hype for that market.

Nakano - I think you'll like the Keating "Chinook" design. (Corduroy won't). It's a broad blade bowie style blade. I'll know more aout the progress on this design when I receive the next prototype. Which is a hefty lockback instead of the original linerlock design. At this time, we are still testing materials/design for heavy duty ultimate strength and secure impact strength.

The Renegade and Blackhawk have been gone for a while now. We still have some parts. Maybe in the future we'll do a run. There were a few minor modifications that we would make.

Ah, some nice news before hitting the sack. Thanks Sal. Do keep us up to date on Keatings "chinook" project.

Corduroy: I do consider the AFCK a bowie type and I have several! The blade is a bit narrow for my tastes. I prefer a broad one as Sal had just clued us in to. Besides, It isn' t a Spydie.

Oooooh....

A broad blade bowie style, with a spydie hole!!! My interest is piqued.

Nakano, I agree. I think the AFCK could be a little broader in blade width for my taste.

Wll - We'll have a "Pattern sample" at the "Blade Show", but it is made with a linerlock. I wasn't satisfied with the outcome so we're remaking the prototype as a hefty lockback. But the sample will give you a size and feel persepective.
