Renegade Bowie

Hi pmel, it's the second one down, below the Chinook II and above a BlackHawk and Standard, in the picture below...

Hi Guys
Thanks for the pics, is this a deleted line, Spyderco doesn't show it on their site.
Phil :)

Yes Phil, they were introduced in '95, are listed in my '98 catalog, but not in my '00 one, (I don't have a '99) so they've been retired for a while now. Still turn up on eBay (which is where I got mine) fairly frequently in the part serrated version, much less frequently and at higher prices in plain edge. If you compare the picture Larry posted with mine you'll see a noticeable difference in the handles. Most, like mine, were unlined and had asymmetrical scales, the finger groove in the left one being shallower than that in the right, and heavily beveled. The very late ones, like that in Larry's photo, have a single liner on the right side and symmetrical scales with a deep finger groove on both sides. The liner addressed problems with the threads in the G10 for the clip screws stripping. The symmetrical handle made the knife more comfortable for right handed folks to use, and easier for lefties to open since the shallow groove obscures about a third of the hole.

Hi Guys
Looks like a cool knife, how would you rate it against such favourites as the Mille or Police. I like the overall shape and blade style.

Hi Guys
have one on its way, CE only but always good to catch something different.
Phil :)

WOW!

Add some length to the choil, beef up the lock to MBC/Chinook standard and that looks to be a winner.

That blade shape and grind look very multi-purpose and the handle looks like it would be a real good feeling one in the hand.

Kinda hard to believe this original format didn't do well enough to stay in the line-up. :(

Surprising how some models don't appeal to the ELUs. :( Both the Renegade and Black Hawk seem like winners to me.

The more I look at that pic of the Renegade with the Chinook II, the more I feel I should've gotten hold of one of the later models the Deacon is describing. These two would be an awesome left pocket/right pocket EDC duo.

MAN! It has all the right stuff. Nicely contoured handle, fearsome looking clip blade with a sweet continually curving edge ending in a needle sharp point on line with the center of the handle.

Sal, any chance you could breathe life into this model again with an MBC rated lock and S30V steel?

This design looks like it would have BIG possibilities in an MBC format, in my opinion, of course.

All the best,
Mike U.

Nice blade shape.
I'd like to see one made truly symmetrical and ambidextrous, like the Chinook II, with two liners.

I carry the Renegade basically everyday if I am out and about in the yard, garden, orchard. I probably use it most for dandelion/thistle excisions butt also in a multitude of tasks. Most recently I carpeted the wife's raised bed garden with thick, tough, plastic, permeable groundcloth (I hate weeds) on the walkways. The pointy end eased the way for the aluminum stakes and the serrated section of the blade cut the tough/smooth plastic much better than a plainedge at less than perfect sharpness. I have appreciated the long sharp point for situations when I had to scrape or gouge out a pipe or enlarge a drainhole.
I definitely recommend the newer release if you are going to use this model. The symmetrical handle slabs are much more comfortable in hard use.
This is another under-appreciated super-utilitarian misunderstood Spyderco model. It can't stand up to MBC rated models even though its profile suggests agressive stabbing/slashing moves. It was marketed more to bikers and their passengers(smaller Blackhawk) as I understand it, butt this is a very useful knife in everyday situations. I have about 100 Spydercos and this is one that I carry more than most. (along with the Calypso Jr, G10 Harpy, and the Worker Commerorative model)

Hi Guys
Wll my Renegade arrived from Australia today. razor sharp and perfect in every way. Hard to imagine why it was discontinued.
