I am due to recieve my Renegade, that I purchased from a Forumite , soon and had a few questions for the Spydernuts. I have always wanted an AFCK (I like the design and hey it has a Spyderhole !) and heard that the Renegade was Spydercos answer to the AFCK. I would be interested on anyones opinion on both of these models. Which do you feel is better?
Thanks

This should help you out, grantdouglas!

Grant Douglas,

Let me know if you don't like it, I'll take it off of your hands.

I was interested in buying it but didn't decide fast enough.

Don't know much about it either but I really like the design.

Actually, the Renegade was designed and came out several months before the AFCK.

I remember the Renegade. It was one of those Spydercos I wouldn't have considered buying at the time. But now I kinda like the design. Oh well :)

Renegate paved my way to be faitful Spyderco ELU.

Renegate was the first Spyderco I wanted. I saw it in a brick and mortar store and fell in love. I intended to buy it to be used as folding steak knife but the price was too high. I Started looking for it in net and found a pic of Civilian. I Didn't have money for that either. I suffered for about three months and bougth Civilian as my second Spyderco (first was endura). Then I bought about 20 other Spydercos and almost forgot Renegate. Last winter I finally got one.:)

The tip is awesome. G-10 texture is smooth (the way I like it). Gin-1 takes fine edge and keeps it decently. What is odd is the thing that handle looks like it was designed for liner lock. This means that there is cutoff in handle slap on the side where right handed liner locks are manipulated. Handle comfort is good but would be better without cutoff.
Renegade rides pretty high in pocket.

AFCK is OK. I don't like the finger guard. ATS-34 holds better edge than Gin-1. What is nice in AFCK is (I have the old one) the round hole and tip down clip. It enables drop openings and much deeper carry than renegade.

Renegade has more character than AFCK. If you are not seeking for regular user buy Renegade. If you are seeking daily carry then AFCK with better carrybility might be better for you. BUT you will feel more pride of owning renegade.

Recieved my Renegade today and I really like the design. It fits well in my hand and is lighter than I thought it would be. I have one question my knife is tight as hell, is this common with these models ?
I tried a little Tuff-Glide then worked it open and closed to no avail. I loosened up the screw but it was still hard to open. Is this something that will work itself out with use or should I send it back to Spyderco?

The Renegade is thinner in OAL thickness than the AFCK. It has no liners since it uses a lockback mechanism. Almost all of the Renegades I' ve ever handled do not have a smooth action out of the box. This may be due partly to the lockback mechanism. But Spyderco has come a long way since.

For those who are not aware, the Renegade was originally designed to be a liner lock folder! Just witness the thumb hole cutout on the top G10 scale. This was intentionally scallopped deeper than the lower scale to facilitate the thumb to depress the intended liner lock. A bit more info here: Sal G. had hinted in the past that there is a batch of original G10 scales from the Renegades sitting somewhere in the Golden facilities...
