I was just surprised with a birthday gift from a friend--a new-in-box Renegade, #C23GPS. He has a little store adjacent to my office, and he knew I was a Spyderfreak. I'm unfamiliar with this model. Can anyone tell me anything? It seems to be no longer manufactured. Clip-point, combo blade, tip-up.

It has grips made of that same matte-finish, charcoal gray material (G10?) that the later Ayoobs had. Could this be modified to left-hand clip? Does it have any value as a collector's piece? Lord knows I don't need it as a user, but it is a nice design. Even more Bowie-style than the Chinook.

Can I get any feedback from the more experienced Spyderfreaks out there?

The Renegade was designed towards the "biker" community. It has very good steel GIN1, and a sleek design. The knife was designed without a hump to make it more attractive towards "bikers" and the design also included the upswept bowie type point to give it a more traditional appearance. It drawbacks where that it was difficult to open, especially left handed, and that the point looked fragile. A LOT of Spyderco collectors love this knife because they tend to become rare, especially NIB, they are starting to have collectors value so i would advise u not to carry it if its mint. The scales are indeed G10, the early version came without a liner, but because of the clipscrews stripping out later models changed to one liner (nested). I first noticed this model when i confiscated it of a Hells Angels "prospect", a few yeards ago. They also had a ladys version of it , but the name slipped my mind.
In all a great knife but seeing that it is NIB i would add it to the collectors vault.

Great gift! :)

Say "loki88" when you say that they made a ladies version of the Renegade were you talking about the smaller version called the Blackhawk? The Blackhawk is truly a smaller shrunken version of the Renegade. I have versions of both knives, Liner and linerless versions both. The Renegade that I carry everyday is the version with the liner. It is one awesome EDC. I have been carrying it and a PE blue Dodo. If you were not referring to the Blackhawk then I don't even have a clue as to what you were talking about.
I agree with your advice to the guy about keeping a NIB mint version strictly for a collector. The Renegade with the liner is one solid, ridgid, tough EDC.
I have over 115 Spydies and so far I have not found one I like to carry every day. I would like to carry my Massad Ayoob but I know it is getting richer in collector. Congratsulations on your Renegade. Loki88 please let me know if that it is the one your talking about. By the Way where is the little pig? :D

Hi Guys
Cool knife, I think that the PS one was only available in later production. I have one of each of the versions and EDC a fully serrated liner model. Great knife, if it's NIB and you don't have a use for it they go for reasonable money on Ebay. The earlier and plainedge versions being the most valuable.

Hi J D Spydo!!!!! :D

yes , indeed it was the blackhawk, the blackhawk was introduced first. This is what it says in the Spyderco book. Designed during 1991-1992 "The blackhawk was designed to be the smaller counterpart or the female version for the lady that's riding her motorcycle with her male partner riding his motorcycle. As a thin knife it was planned to be very elegant. the object was to get rid of the hump, wich we managed to do very well, although that might be one of the problems with the knife. One of the design features is low profile , but that brought the hole very close to the handle, and part of the handle had to be cut away so that you could get to the hole.

Renegade C23 / Blackhawk C24. Early versions of the blackhawk had checkered 6061-T6 aluminium handles, but G10 was soon adopted., and all renegades have been made in G10

page 99/100 "The Spyderco Story"

greetz.

I can't upload my piglet anymore on the Spyderco webforum :grumpy:

Some people tend to argue that the renegade was designed with a liner lock in mind due to the "cutout" in the G10, but it was just to facilitate good purchase on the knife.

IIRC the Blackhawk was the only Spyderco knife ever designed specifically towards females.

:D

I guess if the Spyderco Story book says that it was for ladies then I guess it was. It looks like a fairly masculine knife to me. I have both knives in the liner & linerless models. I guess the older linerless ones might be serious collectors here in a couple of years. I have it and the older Renegade both NIB. I just love my Renegade in the liner version-combo edge. It makes one fine EDC along with Mr. Dodo. I wish they would bring it back in S30V or VG-10 though. This GIN-1 sure needs to be sharpened a lot.

Oh Hello NZ PHil!!! I am about ready to take you up on your "come on down" offer you made me a while back. It is 4 degrees farenheit on my front porch.
And Loki88 I am angry also about little porky not being allowed on the forum. I am going to write my congressman about this one for sure. Merry X-mas You all :D

That's one beefy knife made specifically for a woman! My lady can barely handle a pink Jester

Well, remember that this was ment for the "bikergirls" in the begin of the 90's. This was still the time that it was unusual ( in Europe) to see a women ride a Harley, and they where looked upon as "rough" girls. So even as designed towards females they still had to be real hardcore knives (what they are). I don't think the local "Angels" would be pleased if Spyderco made a purple or pink jester toward their female companions as a biker knife. I would not feel less of a man carrying a Blackhawk. This is a rather "rare" knife, and if even if they know the origin of it's design, i don't really think it will make a difference for a real Spyderfreak. If u like it carry it.

My Renegade is one of my favorite EDC's.I think if you love a knife, you should carry it and use it.Enjoy your knife,we will all be dead one day and none of this on earth will matter.Carry and Cut. ;)

Well "Chains" I second that motion!! For the last 3 month I have had a liner version, combo edge Renegade & a plain edge Dodo for my EDC. So far I have not been lacking in the edged tool dept. I sometimes on special occasions get out my slightly used Dyad (C-44) to give the old Renegade a break. I wish they would bring the Renegade back in one of the newer blade steels i.e. S30V, VG-10. If there were a Spyder "HALL OF FAME" which I hope there will be someday. Then I think that the Renegade ought to get in on the first vote. :)
