Just got a spyderco renegade today. Always wanted one because it looked so similar to the afck. Well, an afck it's not, but still looks good. Very very thin tip, but that's fire with me. This thing is very stiff to open too. Was hoping someone has one and is going to tell me they lossen up after a breaking in period. I am also wondering about this gin 1 blade. Can't be too great because I don't know of too many knived that have it. Prone to rust? Also, this one has a single steel liner, but I hear some don't. -What's the deal with that?

Well, that got to you fast. It was so stiff when I got it that the spyderhole cut my thumb to the point of bleeding. I've actually loosened it up quite a bit.

GIN1 is short for Gingami steel from Japan. Spyderco used this steel in their early years. It contains .90 carbon and 15.50 chromium among other ingredients. So it has good rust resisitant capability. If you run a search on this Spyderco forum, you will find discussion that the Renegade was originally planned to be a liner lock folder! The single scale scallop near the opening hole area is an indication, since it was made for the thumb to facilitate the depressing of the liner lock. Further, it was discussed that there was a bunch of these handles still sitting somewhere at the Golden facility. And that there were thoughts on using them to assemble some liner locks with...

I read that all of those rumors were completely untrue, but I can't imagine why the scale is like that if they are.
