Renewed appreciation for flippers - Persistence cut my thumb!

Well... I've been so enamored with my Persistence that I've been playing with it constantly. And, of course, play with knives long enough (especially really sharp ones!), while you're not paying close enough attention during closing, and you're gonna get bit!

Yes, that flap of skin had to be removed... leaving some pretty raw flesh. Minimal bleeding, fortunately, not quite deep enough for that. Whew!

Anyway... just so happens that the part of my thumb that got cut is the part I always use to open my knives, whether with thumb studs or Spyder holes. And right now the thumb is waaay too sore to be doin' any of that. :(

Then, a ha, one of my favorite knives that I've been neglecting for a while now leaps to the fore... my Leek. And wouldn't you know it... the flipper comes to the rescue. Easy to flip open with my forefinger, no pain for my thumb at all. I can play with and open at least ONE great knife while my thumb is out of commission healing.

Always good to have a nice flipper knife on hand when you cut your thumb tip! ;)

I just picked up a Spyderco Gayle Bradley yesterday and right out of the box I was a little worried about doing what you just did as this one is razor sharp and not very forgiving.

A knife usually isn't "mine" until it bites me.

Ha ha, the Leek and the Persistence are both pretty great knives for the money. Neither one of mine has "bit" me yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time since I honed them both to a hair whittling level of sharpness!

I think some knives are more blood thirsty than others for some reason...

Sorry to hear you got bit. Spydies are known to do that from time to time. ;)

I find that liner locks/frame locks are more prone to cutting fingers than back locks and such. I think it's because your thumb has to stay in the path of the closing blade. Factor in the "play factor," and odds for a cut are much higher.

Cats arrived today. The above cut had started to heal a bit, so I decided to give the Cats some play time, which went on for quite some time as I watched TV... and I did it AGAIN! Not bad, but it sure hurt! Half on the old cut and half new skin. Dang@! These knives are really sharp.

You call that a cut! Try 9 stitches on one finger with a custom skinner to the bone. Now thats a cut to be proud of. :D

Yeah, my cut is no big deal for sure. All it does is keep me from knife playing for a short while. I'm so thankful that's all it was! A bad cut, like what you had, is a frightful thing.
