Rep points - are we in junior high, or what?

Rep points are something I never bothered with. Never gave any, never cared about my rating. The guys I see with red reps are known trolls or proven rabblerousers. The guys I see with a whole line of green are usually guys that hanga around in Community or W&C, and I guess are sort of a mutual admiration society, giving one another points. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. Im just a frequent browser, sometime poster, and longtime member. Never thought I had anything to prove around here. But this is looking lately like gradeschool name calling, and anonymous to boot.

To whit:
In a recent thread, the poster asked:
Trying to help a friend find a knife. Probably a folder, for general camping use. I'd think perhaps a half serrated blade would be good for this. ~2" blade. <$30. (obviously its not going to be anything super great.

Any ideas?

To which I responded:
if it's for camping, you don't really want a folder. I'd recommend a CS Bushman or mini, or a Frosts Swedish Army fixed blade, heck even a good old Kabar.

if it really is a $30 folder you want, get a kabar dozier or BM Pika or mini.

(Everyone with me so far? A question was asked, I gave my opinion)

Well I was given a negative, with this comment:
Folders are great campers

whaa? I read the 'sticky", and it said negative rep points are for posts that are "offensive or in bad taste". Does my post fit in either category?

(by the way, later in the thread I was vindicated by the 'friend of the first poster:)
Hello there. I'm the guy GQGeek is talking about in the first post. Basically I want a small light fixed blade knife for camping. I don't hunt.

I thought about getting the Mini Bushman from CS, but 9" is a bit longer than what I'm looking for.

I've been thinking about getting this Bear Claw by Columbia River. Anyone have any reviews on this one?

Also, the knife I have now is just a $5 piece of crap I got from BudK.

Thanks for the help.

So back to my gripe...what kind of ca-ca is this? Someone has a different opinion and starts throwing around negaitive rep points? This place is a joke, if this is where it's headed.

Sometimes I think we are in junior high school, where people get all upset because one person (out of 30,000) disapproved of one thing you said (out of how many posts?)

You might want to read the sticky thread again, with emphasis on all the times I explained you don't have to get every dadburn vote in the county....

It amazes me that some people get so worked up over a silly little red or green chiclet. This is how I regard the rep point system:

Red = Someone I will not deal with on BFC.

Green = Someone I will deal with on BFC.

This pertains to trades, sales, etc. As far as any other BS I couldn't care less. I have a lot of rep points. Most are due to helping people get through a problem on BFC or helping resolve a computer related issue. (I still think we should have that computer forum.) I have gotten negative points a few times but do I care? No. Should you? No. I know my reputation around here was intact long before the rep system was implemented so I am not worried in the least about them. I would be totally fine with having the system disappear.

Cougar, re-read my post above, and you can see that it's not the fact that one person out of 30k disagrees with me, but the power that the rep system gives to that one person that bothers me.

I love how you mods try to turn the complaint on the complainer. If you want the rep "system" to have value or validity, then take my concern seriously. If you're saying my complaint is silly because the "system" is not serious...then you should get rid of the system. You can't have it both ways.

What power???

He has absolutely no power whatever -- any more than the guy down the street from me who is allowed to vote even though he's an idiot. All he gets is one vote, and his vote is overwhelmed by all the people in town who are not idiots. Look, your reputation is still positive.

If the idiots ever get to be the majority, then we can worry.

Sure we can :D

The system has power over people who believe in it, and only to the extent or for the purpose they believe in it. Sometimes I read a great post, but interjecting a comment in the thread may be beside the point -- the thread has moved way past that post, or it isn't about attaboys. So I give the poster a rep point, with a comment. It's just between us, nobody else cares, but I liked his point of view.

The system doesn't have to be serious, it doesn't have to be about anything that really affects Bladeforums in a big way, as long as it's about what makes those people happy who choose to participate. On some forums, the guys give each other green chiclets for fun, on some nobody cares the system exists. It doesn't have to be the same thing for everybody.

When you get dinged for no substantial reason, by a wienie who won't sign his name or say why he gotcha, laugh and move on to something you care about.

Not to mention the avatar hotties... :footinmou

:D

The first rep point I recieved on BF was a red for simply asking what the advantages are of making a knife's handle of Ti as opposed to some other sort of less costly metal.

On the other hand, recently I got a green for merely asking in G&G what brand of blue jeans is a good buy.

So, it all balances out eventually I suppose.

Perhaps when giving Rep Points the choices should not be "approve/disapprove" but "good post/bad post" or something like that, so as not to give the impression that you give points depending on whether or not you agree on something.

If you are not a dickhead then you will never end up in the red. Just continue to do things the way you do and don't worry about the occasional red chicklet. They don't amount to a hill of beans.

I'm going to use this thread to ask a question. I've gotten a chicklet of a different color. It looks to be a grayish color. I cant find a name for it. The thread involved a minor issue , so I dont take it as a negetive. I do have a red chicklet, so its not me going colorblind! Thanks for helping and for the good work you mods do to keep us middle schoolers in line.
guy

The blue chicklet would be from a newbie who doesn't have enough "juice" yet to give you any kind of real feedback.

I got one recently that I could tell was trying as hard as it could to be a red chicklet, but the guy was shooting blanks. :)

So what is it when you get a 'grey' chiclet? That's one I got and I thought it was a negative.

Coop

Coop, the grey or the blue are the same -- just show up different on different monitors. It's a newbie who doesn't effect the actual count. If he doesn't leave a message, you can only guess if he loves you. :D

Oh, don't make me laugh like that when I'm eating spaghetti & meatballs!

He loves me..... NOT! ;)

Thanks for the info!

My mind is a wonderful thing.....very simple. The term ' Chicklets' almost rolled me to the floor. Hadnt thought of them that way! Great way to keep them in perspective.

Please read the sticky thread. There are several reasons the system rejects ratings and turns them to a gray square. Being a newbie is not one of them. Newbies can give points, though not as many per click as people who have a high rating themselves. By the way, a gray square was not necessarily intended to be negative.

All things shall come to pass!
