Yesterday I was given a long rope that was made out of rawhide. Old school for sure. The mice had chewed it in half in a couple of places. It is a shame to toss it out, so I rescued it. I don't braid so I need info. I know reusable rope was made out of horsehair and rawhide. What a great skill to have. I know rope was also woven out of plant material. I would like to repair the rope. Too nice to let it go in the trash. I could just soak it and unravel it and use the rawhide lace for other projects. Might be nice to use it like a paracord wrap on a project. Just thinking.

Do you have any pictures?

I know Doc does some braid work, and I think he makes cord as well, maybe he will chime in.

Get a good knot and braiding book ( I like the ones by Geoffrey Budworth) and learn how to splice the broken pieces together. Its not hard to do and riatas are hard to find and expensive. If you have a Tandy leather with a person who is knowledgeable about riatas working there they are usually very helpful and may have some good books for info too.

It will take some work. If you are unsure of doing it find someone who can. Remember the new splice will have to go back a ways on both pieces.

If you decide it is above your skills to repair it. Save the pieces for other projects, like handle wrapping and such.
