Repair question (Please help, Sal)

I wanted to send my Military in for repair. It's pretty much just for a couple of stripped screws and loose washers (when the blade is closed, I can push it other side far too easily and can hear the blade scraping against the g10 when I open the knife). I have put the blade back in the box along with a letter describing the problem. I havnt sealed the packaging yet and just wanted to know if there was anything else I should put in.

Before you send it in, you should really contact Warranty & Repair, find out what the cost and return postage will be, and enclose payment. Be sure to let them know where you are located.

The knife is still intact if thats what you mean. I emailed warranty and repair and they said I need to mail it in so they can determine the problem :( The problem with enclosing money is that i'm not sure if it would be ok for me to put in Australian currency.
Any ideas?
 
Doubt they'd accept foreign currency, not to mention that sending cash through the mail is never a good idea. Credit card details perhaps? Can't really say what would work, which was one reason I suggested contacting them and explaining where the knife would be coming from.

Never have been able to understand why there are so few countries where international postal money orders are accepted.

AusPost sells Western Union Money Orders, might be possible to do it that way? I personally haven't used them though.
 
I would email Spyderco customer care and ask first. I hope they have improved though.

I tried contacting them some time back about buying a new clip and never had a response.
 
This was sort of one of the reasons I wanted to Sal to help out here. When I emailed spyderco, I told them that the knife would be sent from Australia and asked them about the repair cost. All I was told is that I should send it in with $5 :confused:

I normally don't get involved in customer service. We have very competent staff in that department.

It sounds like the knife was not purchased new? It also sounds like the knife was taken apart. Sometimes stripped screws" are "stripped liners". Can't tell long distance.

If we have to "rebuild" the knife, there will be a fee. It's not possible to determine what's wrong though until we have it.

I might add that buying used knives is always a gamble. There are many amateurs that think because a knife has screws, they are suddenly "knife-makers". Unfortunately few have the skills to really put together a knife properly and fewer still have the skills to know they didn't do it correctly.

Rebuilding a knife is often more difficult than assembling a new one because we have to figure out what was done improperly. Shop time is about $50 / hour for custom work.

Thanks for the reply Sal and sorry for getting you involved in this. I got the knife brand new from the Factory outlet. I was the one who accidently stripped the screws when trying to fix the jilted blade (got there eventually though). What I mean by stripped screws is that the heads themselves are rounded, but thankfully the problem happened when I tightened the screws, so the knife is in no danger of falling apart. I took the knife to an IT store and asked if they could remove the screws and they told me they could, but the screws would be destroyed, so as far as that problem goes, it could be fixed if I could get extra screws from somewhere (less hassle for both of us).
 
I think you would you be best served by asking Customer service to send you some screws.

If you purchased the knife new, there are not likely other problems. I'm surprised to hear that the lock moved all the way. We are pretty fussy about the lock location.

I'm sorry for the difficulties that arise from the long distance.

Ah, the lock is fine and only engages at the start (it's nothing that serious thankfully). I think I actually would be better off sending in to you guys. The only problem is payment for return shipping and possibly repair. Do you have any suggestions on how I should make the payments?

EDIT: Im not sure if you can see it in the picture, but the washer is not actually touching the blade. This means that when the knife is closed, I can quite easily push it all the way so that it rubs against the handle. Apart from that and the rounded screw heads, the knife is in perfect condition.

I might add that if the knife was purchsed through our Australian distributor, he would take care of the problem, probably replace the knife and send yours to us. That is an advantage to span the distance.

Thanks Sal. I'll send it in this weekend. I purchased this Millie from the SFO when I was on holiday in Golden so no luck returning it to a local dealer :(

EDIT: what's the adress I should send it to?

Sal, thank you for bearing with me so far and I cannot thank you enough for helping me out. I know that you probably hear this a lot, but the way you treat your customers is nothing short of amazing.
 
I posted on another thread a while back that Case and Spyderco are the only manufacturers that have earned my loyalty. This is because of the excellent customer service I have received from both. This thread only reinforces my initial impression of Spyderco.
 
WOW I can't believe you got the big guy on that one.
The last Millie I tried to fix was the last Millie I ever try to fix.
Next time it goes back with $5 return shipping and detailed explination.
 
By the way, Paypal is a great way to bill someone a long distance away. They take a small percentage, but it is very convenient to be able to charge credit cards internationally and not have to deal with different currencies. When our company sends product to individuals overseas it is our solution.
