Replace an ATS 34 Sebenza Blade w/CPM S30V?

I wanted some advice regarding my large Sebenza. I've EDc'd it on and off for over 10 years. It's been back to CR for a new clip, stud and maintenance one time over the years, and it's pretty much like new except for a bit of wear to the finish on the grips. But with all the attention newer steels are getting these days I find myself wondering if I should send it back again to CR and have a new CPM S30V blade installed. They charge $125, I think. Will I notice a big difference? I find the edge lasts ok on the old ATS blade, but I'm pretty careful with it.

Personally, I'd keep it like it is. There's nothing wrong with ATS34, esp the way CRK does their HT. It's a good, tough steel... maybe even tougher than S30V, but somebody that's more steel knowledgable than I am would have to settle that. It's not going to be as good on edge holding, mind you, but it is tough.

I grow pretty attached to things that have served me well over a number of years. I like to keep them in their original condition as long as possible.

There is nothing wrong with ats-34 but if you want to go for a newer steel why not just get a whole new seby ?

A different blade steel is agreat excuse for a new one :D

You should call CRK and ask but, I'm pretty sure that they will fit you a new blade and send the old one back to you with the knife. Then you could switch them out any time you want and have the best of both worlds.

Having had both steels I can say the S30V has better wear resistance but I wouldn't throw out either .If you really want S30V then get another Sebenza !

I have an older ATS-34 sebenza as well. s30v does hold an edge better. But is it enough to replace a blade? I'd say no.

Enjoy what you have, or if you need s30v keep and eye out on the forsale forum here where you could pick one up for considerably less then new retail.

I agree re just getting another knife. The ATS model is a small piece of history, so might as well just keep it intact.

Not that I see a problem with the ATS.

You just want a new knife... so get one. :)

alternatively, you could sell the one you have and buy a new one--probably do the whole trade for less than $125

If the blade is still in good shape keep the knife the way it is. Designed to last a lifetime.

ats-34/154cm is my favorite steel to date. but my main user is an S30V Lg Seb... I agree with the consensus.

Keep it, you wont be able to tell the difference in normal, everyday use.

You're good to go, it's just a nagging thought that keeps popping in your head
I had the same question years ago when they made the change from ATS-34
to BG-42 and called them and they said they'd recommend hanging onto the
ATS-34 blade as I wouldn't see a marked changed in performance.

So as the others above have recommended, block that thought, sharpen that rascal
and continue on, you have a great knife there with very good steel.
