What trendy knives have replaceable scales? Is the availability of parts you can modify part of your purchasing decision?

Aftermarket scales are available for almost any popular production knife, but the one for scale swapping that comes to mind is Three Rivers Manufacturing (TRM). Not only do they make a wide variety of modded scales at the factory, the knives are designed for swapping scales without disassembly. Not just that, but the Neutron, Atom and Newtron are great knives in their own right.

TRM's Atom and Neutron are built for ease of scale replacement. You don't even have to touch the pivot screw as the scales fit right over the pivot. Two screws on the show side and three on the lock side and Bob's your uncle. They also make a sh*t ton of replacement styles.

TRM is first thing that comes to mind as well. Hinderer would be another.

Where do you get the replacement scales? I didn't know they offered them

CPK sells them their selves. It is better to order the extra scales on the preorders. But sometimes they have extra scales that you can buy after the preorders are fulfilled. Just ask Jo. Sometimes people sell them on the CPK sub-forum.

Ahhh I forget about the sub-forum all the time lol I never thought about asking Jo. I freaking love those people. Absolutely great humans and a joy to work with

+1 for Hinderer, they even offer their own replacement scales made from multiple materials. I am an OEM kinda guy so a factory option is a bonus for me. Add in the aftermarket support and they are like the Glock of the knife world.View attachment 1728333

Tons of 3rd party replacement scales available for several Spydercos. It’s a Zoo, really. I like it.

Hinderer was the one I couldn't think of. Thanks for the lead on Three Rivers as well.

The first ones that I think about are the Bugout and the Para 2 and 3. If you're thinking about getting into the scale making game those are always wanted. And if you wanted to be ahead of the game you could make scales for the new Benchmade Taggedout and maybe the Redoubt. Griptillians are always good ones too.
Edit: Spelling

Customization possibilities play a major role in my knife purchase decisions. Not necessarily just parts availability, but simply the ideas that I come up with of making something my own, and then making it happen. I don't consider myself to have the most knowledge or skill at doing so, but I enjoy the process of trying to learn and giving it a shot. It's half the fun for me. I can no more stop myself from doing it than I can stop breathing the air, and it's something that extends for me into all facets of life and many of my possessions, not just with knives. From my toys as a kid to my living spaces throughout my life, and everything in between. It's been that way for me for as long as I can remember.

So this thread started as a fishing expedition, so I could learn a bit more about the subject and get leads for future research. Expect a magazine article on this in Knives Illustrated in the future :)
