Replacement axe handles

I have done some business with these guys, They make many levels of quality handles. Th BR grade with tinted finish are best. Should'nt cost more than a few bucks, accept if the order is under $200.00(which it will be) they tack on a $20.00 processing fee. Their website is www.vbmfg.com and the person I was using as contact is below. You may want to take a pic of your existing handle with a ruler as scale and get it to him to confirm size and shape.

I too am looking for a RETAIL place to buy odd handles ( even not so odd ). I couldnt use 200$ worth of handles in 3 lifetimes, and think 20$ penalty is just wrong. Is there some where to buy 1 or 2 handles? I have a couple of Wetterlings, a large hunter and a carpenters hatchet and would like to buy replacements for them in advance. I emailed Wetterling twice and have never received an answer,i even tried Gransfors Bruks USA distributor tosee if i could get one of thier handles and use in the Wetterling ,no answer. This seems like a good opportunity for someone to start an online business. Mark

try www.househandle.com

i never ordered anything from this place but the selection seems to be good and i dont think there is a minimum processing fee. i plan to order some handles for some tools and this is the place i'll be ordering from. good luck and let us know how it works out with this place.

PMTHK Called house handles friday and ordered 7 handles , some hammer handles and some hatchet handles. It was a very pleasent experiance, nice people and they took my info and i was done in a minute or two. The handles should be here next week some time i will let you know. thanks mark cook

glad it worked out. i guess im gonna be ordering couple of handles from there. now i have to take an inventory of all the broken handles and place an order.

my father is a professional contractor so i end up with alot of tools with broken handles. for him its more economical to just replace broken tools with new ones. its a strange world...

btw in which grade did you order? their premium grade (AA) is not much more expensive than their lesser grade (i cant remember the grade name) i'm wondering how their "AA" is. if you can get one in hickory free from knots and any heartwood that is vertical grained you got yourself a great handle for the price.

good luck and please let us know how it turns out.

I know what you mean ive got a lot of hammers ive used over the years that the wood or even fiberglass handles have given up the ghost. When the pile gets to 3 or 4 i put new handles in them( i am i carpenter ). While they do ok they are never as good as a factory handle, i dont know why. Ive been reading here about putting a roll pin in a hatchet or a hawk. I am going to try that on a tomahawk i made and a claw hammer . As far as the quality i got the AA ( the better grade ) and i hear that sometimes a handle with sap wood is springier than one with out. I dont know. I found a double bitted axe on the job and put a handle in it my dad got at the flea market ( read seconds), it split wide opened when it got wet. It will get a clean up and sharpen job and a new handle when they get here and a roll pin as well. Mark

basically this site has some excellent information on how to put a new handle. i have learned from this site to file the eye of the heads to put a taper to it so it will be more difficult for the head to fly out during use. also you can soak the head portion of the axe in lindseed oil after you fit a new handle. the oil will be absorbed by the wood and expand making a tight fit and from what i understand lindseed oil will harden when dry.

PMTHK The handles arived today, they arent to bad either. When i have time i will install a few and let you know how it is going. Been reading that link you posted ,good stuff. Most of the handle install ive known a while but the linseed oil was a good tip i didnt know. Thanks . That link to the hatchet sized double bitted (hatchet axe ?) was almost more than i could bare. But 145 $ for a hatchet at this time is a little much. I am still buying parts for a rifle i am building. Mark
