Replacement Blades?

So instead of buying a new knife, I've decided to just replace the blade on my 5 year old 550HG. My only question is will Benchmade let me upgrade to a black blade? It is currently a beaten, scratched, over sharpened/grinded satin finish, but I would like to change it up this time around.

Thanks! -Kris

From what I have heard here on BFs they will only replace the blade with a blade of the same steel but you can ask for coated or not when they install a new blade.
I have heard it costs $30.

The site says $30 for satin and $40 for black. I could always call customer service and get an answer, but that would be too much work :).

PS: I feel like I remember seeing somewhere that BM wouldn't switch out 550 for 551 blades or vice versa, but I am not sure. Does anybody here know?

No one would help you with that attitude. :(

You should call them and do your do diligence in research before ask people for help. You already have an answer from billym :)

Kris, I think it can be done without any hassle. I remember sending a beat-up Mini Griptilian 557SBK back to BM to have the blade replaced a long time ago. I requested a satin 555HG blade to installed for $30 without any problems.

Thanks Nuke. I looked back at the FAQ page and it said that they usually don't offer blade changes. I just don't really want to get rid of the original round hole for the new oval style.

umm... My bad? I guess humor doesn't really come off very well over text, which is contrary to other threads on this site. Anyway, I apologize for asking a question on a forum. :)

I knew they replaced them in some cases, but I'm very happy to hear once again that they are willing to help. A buddy of mine borrowed my 707 Sequel during a deployment and it really needs some love now that I have it back. It was a first production run version and I couldn't be happier that he beat the hell out of it. If they do replace the blade, I'll miss the first production number/lettering on it, but it'll be good as new except the marks on the grip. Either way I'm happy it was used.

I'm pretty sure the new grips have the round hole. I had a mini grip when they first came out and it had a chamfered oval hole.

Various folks have spoken to Benchmade, and they have stated that they will not upgrade blade steels.

And yet, if you sent them an M390-equipped RSK, they would replace it with M390, correct? How does that work for discontinued knives in obscure steels?

Only if the model continues and older steel is out of stock, then BKC will replace it with "Current production steel " of that particular model.

For example, if you have 940 with 154cm, and definetly want to swap the blade (I wouldn't, unless you have attachment to your 'handle' or something about that knife) I believe BKC will ask you that they will replace with S30V, which is current production model.

Another would be Griptilian. Stock comes with 154cm, until this year with "Custom build" sales directly from BKC. So, they will replace with same steel. (154cm, D2, n690, or s30V)
