is there a source for new or used blades to repair an old knife? i found a 501 in the parking lot yesterday. the handle portion is in good shape. the blade has been sharpened to a nub. i'd like to reblade it and put it in my edc rotation.

some pics cuz everyone likes pics :D

it appears to have g10 covers and the stamp is script. is this from the custom shop?

I think that the covers are micarta and with the script stamp that would put the knife in the 1975-1981 period with standard production, not from the custom shop.

Exposed rocker rivit makes your knife the earliest variation starting about 1975. The rivet was covered after the first couple years.
Personally I would say use it as is or find a better one if it bothers you. It is to common to go thru the trouble of a reblade. A new blade would just take away the character anyways.

Roger, I looked right at the rocker rivet and it didn't even register—good eye.

IF i sent it to buck, would they just put in a new blade or replace the whole knife? I dont want to lose any of the character in the handle.

im thinking i may just use it as is. it's a pretty handi little knife and rides unnoticed in the pocket.

If it were mine I would just resharpen that baby and call it a day. They don't make any more 501's with micarta scales and the Buck script logo. I think the steel on that one is 440C too. If you reblade it you'll get a 420HC stamped with the current year.

I'm always amazed when I see knives that look like this and wonder how much they have cut and how many times they have been sharpened in their life.

Someone didn't know how to sharpen a knife. The handle material on that model is micarta and the stamp is original for that blade of 440C steel. DM

The 501 is my favorite and that one has the stainless steel bolsters. Personally I would definitely have it rebladed. Just tell them you dont want the handle messed with, but I would let them clean that up as well.
To me there is no character in that blade.

If you’re gonna carry a Buck 501 you might as well get the value of a 501 size blade. Get it rebladed and carry it - you’ll still have Micarta handles and the original frame. OH
