replacement for Manix?

So I had a Spyderco Manix for a couple years, and it was by far my favorite production knife, ever. Incredibly good at cutting, held an edge forever, and also had a very strong blade and solid grip for self defense. Loved the textured G10 scales as well. Unfortunately, I lost it recently due to an unfortunate "airport" incident that involved me arriving too late to check my baggage.

I would have purchased a replacement (another great thing was the price), but Spyderco is no longer producing it, of course (why why why???).

So the question is, what comes the closest to filling this exact niche in current-production folders? Right now I'm looking very hard at the Lone Wolf Harsey T1 and T2, as well as Benchmade's Dejavoo. I actually really liked the super-strong lockback on the Manix, but I could live with a liner lock, as long as it's really strong.

I confess that I own neither the Benchmade 950 or the Zero Tolerance ZT0200.

However, both of these folders have pretty hefty sized blades, nicely sculpted handles, and are on my short list of knives to get in the near future. At the very least I think they deserve a look.

Yeah -- I did take a look at these online, and I do like them (that Benchmade 950 definately caught my eye early on in the search), but I really got addicted to that awesome, wide, leaf-shaped, flat-ground blade on the Manix. It was like having my first one-hand-opening Spyderco from 1993 all over again -- it was that much of a leap over the rest of my collection.

Try taking a look at an Al Mar SERE 2000. It has a very solid feel like the Manix. The blade geometry is different and not as thin as the Manix but I think you will find it to be a more than suitable replacement. If not, pick up a Manix on the secondary market. They still seem to pop up fairly often.

The benchmade Rukus and mini-Rukus seem like the Benchmade versions of the manix to me. They both are big knives that lock up like tanks and cut great.

I think Sal stated a few weeks ago that Eric was working on a new Ball Bearing lock Manix.

Yoda, that would sure be a seller. Hope its true.

Edit: found it - "Eric is working on a new version of the Manix design with a ball-cage lock. We'll make it in Golden. It's thinner and lighter." Link.

Most of these links will show "no longer available" or something to that effect.

In my search to stock up on a few large and small Manixes I have been down that road. There are still a few retailers with one in stock but you have to go several pages deep to find any. The big auction site is probably your best bet . . . Or the BF exhange here . . .

B/M's Dejavoo is more like the Military. Manix is in a class by itself. I have 5 of them and it's an all time great Spyderco.
Something from B/M I think is definitely different than the Manix, but is heavy duty as the Manix is the Skirmish. It's all titanium handle and thick frame lock has an excellent reputation for strength. The blade is even larger, has way more cutting edge and made from the same type steel. (even has the Spyderco hole) Handle isn't G-10 but it offers a very secure grip. Plus, it opens easier.

I have both knives too and I concur with Jill's remark.

Of the two I prefer the Manix for pure usability but the Skirmish is a fine knife by any stretch! The blade is just really big.

That will be awesome -- I look forward to it, and I'm relieved Spyderco hasn't abandoned the design.

That's good to know about the Dejavoo, and I certainly agree about the Manix.

Can anyone comment on the Lone Wolf T2? For some reason, I can't really warm to the Skirmish -- somehow it subjectively gives me that feeling of "trying too hard."

If someone would say some good things about the T2, I'd probably buy one at this point, at least to hold me over until that futuristic, next-generation Manix comes out.

I have a Manix and the closest thing I have to it is a Buck Strider Tarani. It is clunkier and not as smooth, but similarly sized and tough with G10 scales and a wide blade. Might be worth a look.

I do like the choil on that Tarani. One of the great things about the Manix was that as big and tough as it was, you could always choke up on the choil and do precision stuff too. The design was just an inspired work of functional art.

I have yet to find an actual replacement for the manix, the closest I have come is the Blade-Tech rijbak.

How about a Spyderco Tenacious..?

Dude I would miss my flight before I handed over my Manix:grumpy:

You can only replace a Manix with another Manix IMO

Yeah I know -- it was an important flight, though, and a $100 sacrifice didn't seem so terrible right then and there.
