Replacement handle bowed?

The pics show a replacement racing axe handle supplied by an internet store here Down Under.

I regard it as bowed and unfit for purpose - certainly for a racer.

The supplier argues that it's not bowed and is fine, and is refusing a return/refund.

Would you fit it to a racer?

It's bowed but not horribly. If I were to put it on a racing axe (or one of my users) I would steam it and straighten it first.

And I'd make that swell more abrupt. In competition they make you pin a racing axe. The pin don't do much good when the axe leaves your hands.

I had a bunch of handles warp on me last summer. Maybe spring cut wood and my dry climate doesn't help when they are air dried coming from down south. I just did like Squarepeg suggested and heat straightened them. It's easy enough to do.

Thanks gents.

It's not visible in these pics but it slso has a spiral running down about a third of it, the foot end. I've seen scoring used to improve grip but this would interfere with the hand sliding.

I can see the lathe marks left on it. That's not very good quality control. I hope it wasn't to expensive.

Really any more I am just happy to get decent grain alignment and figure on taking it from there. Not saying it's right, but sadly that is all I expect. I would of thought a racing axe handle would have been almost ready to go though.

To the contrary, a lot of racing axe handles are left rougher because they know that the folks fitting them are pickier about how they go about tuning their handles so they leave some extra meat on 'em.

Well, this haft has a smooth sanded top half and spiral bottom. And the spiral in practice doesn't give you any more meat to work with.
