I was trying to loosen the lock on my Opinel after having popped it off the knife and I pressed it too far, resulting in a crack down the middle of the metal sheet. Is there any possible way to order replacement lock rings for the knife?

I think it would cost them more to mail you one from france than it would cost you to walk to your local store and buy a new opinel...

I've never seen Opinels in a store around here.

It's not very urgent. The crack is only half the height of the lock collar. I re-tightened it some and slid it back on. It's loose on the knife, but the lock still functions, no play, passes spinewhacks etc. Long-term durability will be interesting though. By the time it faisl though I should have money for another. :P

I thought you meant he had extra rings. I'm aware He stocks Opinels, I plan to order some 10's and another 12 along with a sodbuster and maybe some more Mora's when I get some money. Thanks for the link though.

My inclination would be to order a new Opinel and convert that one to a fixed blade -- wrap it with wire. :)

Cougar that would work good given it's large size. Maybe I could fill the pivot with some type of epoxy or something.

Vivi , you're killin me bro.
Want a fixed blade that is very cost effective and razor sharp ? By a Mora.
Opinels are also very cost effective and a fine knife but your not going to get a replacement lock for one.
Mow a few lawns or whatever for some extra dough and you can have enough for 2-3 of each knife.

And you can baton Moras without any fancy schmancy handle tricks :D

Vivi,
drop me an email with your address and I'll post you a brand new #1 Mora.

Vivi sometimes some people just don,t get economic realities . Cougar took the words from my mouth as far as a fixed blade are concerned . I don,t know how you would do it securely though. Maybe if you have access to a drill press you could drill a second pin hole . That and a sinew wrap . Its better to ask for an experts opinion on that .

If you can get a solid ring that would fit over the blade and snug onto the pivot area maybe you could epoxy that on .

Opinel also sells folders without the locking ring . They might be designed differently so as to make them more secure than an Opie without a locking ring . If you can look them up maybe you can see how it was done .

Whatever , good luck .

Viking, thank you for the generous offer.

Kevin, I've got a smaller non-locking Opinel. It appears to be the same construction, minus the outer ring of steel. I'd like to try the FB conversion for a new project, so when I come up with some good ideas I'll let everyone know. The ring still function on this Opinel and I really doubt I'll have any durability issues, only thing I don't like about this mishap is the ring is loose around the collar now. I have an older Opinel that has a loose ring too that rattles when disengaged, moving freely. Still functions fine too though. I could just pop the collar off them and use them as friction folders. They'd still be very functional.

I'd just like to be able to order batches of 5 or so spare rings for a specific Opinel model. I doubt it would cost much more than a dollar or two before shipping. Out of curiosity, do Opinel knives have any type of warranty? I've never looked into whether they do or not. Id keep the one this thread is about but I'd like to know for future reference.

Are you serious:eek: We are talking about a maximum 8 dollar knife. How I it possible to produce a 8 dollar knife that includes chipping and other overhead costs, you also want a warranty for that price. I thought we Dutch people were cheap-bastards;) :p

Try somehow to make it a fixed knife and buy another folder.

Btw did you heat the metal ring before taking it apart and putting it back on?

Vivi, I have been looking to get a messed up Opinel on the infinitely cheap, in order to try out some customization ideas that I have had. I would be willing to give you a couple or three bucks (posted) if you want to send it to me. Email me. My email address is below. Remove the {AT} and replace with @

Opinel charges a lot for shipping to the United States. I was going to order a sheath, and they wanted $22 for shipping. Not happening.... well, at least I wouldn't spend that much. Maybe a group order or something....

Don't believe they do, but remember, most warranties don't cover it when the end use screws up the product, especially when the end user was trying to modify it.

Can't help you with the lock ring, Vivi.... but I admire a guy who respects a good tool enough to want to fix it, even if it's only an $8-$10 item. I used to have a collection valued in the mid-five figure range, and I've gotten more enjoyment lately out of some inexpensive Moras than any of those safe queens ever gave me.

Just thinking .... I'm sure somebody must have an Opinel with a bent/broken blade or other damage. Maybe a post on the Trading or WTB forums would get you that lock ring you need.

Looking form that prospective; credits for Vivi:thumbup:

A knife is a tool that demands use. It’s a waist of those locked up safe queens, sell them so other people who can use and love them so the knife will be appreciated.

And again I hear someone who loves his Mora’s! It’s the knife in its most pure essence. You only really need a axe and Mora when you are going into the woods...okay SAK is nice to have to!

I agree completely, Pietje. We always hear the old Nordic proverb, "A knifeless man is a lifeless man." I'd add that an unused knife is a lifeless knife. My collection is pretty much gone now except for a few sentimental favorites, mostly gifts from family and friends. And my working knives, of course.

BTW .... I don't recall hearing of any knife manufacturers or makers in the Netherlands. I assume there must be, and maybe even a distinctive style to knives made in your country?

Aren,t Helle knives from up around that Way ? Scary sharp out of the box. They sell blades and kits as well .

A knifeless man is a lifeless man . I like that . Now if I could just convince all the people who try to mooch knives off of me of that .

Vivi,

Since BF email is not working, I will reply in this post; I've now sent the Mora via regular mail (don't have a tracking number since it costs about twice as what the knife is worth :D)

Let me know when it arrives, and have fun with it.
