Replacement pivot screws?

I was just wondering if you have ever replaced the standard Spydie riveted blade pivot with an adjustable screw/barrel bolt style arrangement. Up here in Canada any knife that can be 'flicked' open (almost every riveted-style Spyderco) is a potentially prohibited weapon, and I'm looking for a way to tighten the pivots to prevent this.

Many many times. Its a fairly common request from a lot of users, usually from those trying to take out lateral blade play in their knife and getting carried away with a ball peen hammer and making the pin tension far too tight which is another way to do what you are trying to do. You might try that first actually. Worse case scenario you'd send it to me anyway, but it might save you the shipping.

Thanks for the amazingly fast reply! I think I'll give the ball peen hammer trick a try. Like you said, worst case scenario I can have it replaced. BTW, how much would you usually charge for straight across replacement (I might think about doing all of my riveted Spydies)?

Well, the shipping is part of it and to Canada its like $8.55 for me.

On the barrel, they each run about $6 a piece after shipping and then I get about $30 to do the switch out. It is not easy to remove those barrel heads and many times a small tell tale nick may show on the area there because the FRN handle is so soft but I manaage usually to pull it off without visible damage or very very minimal and a lot of the time whatever damage does occur is covered up nicely by the new larger button head screw. To do this without damage is time consuming. And each knife takes a bit work to get done, plus the barrels and screws need to be cut to the proper length and fitted correctly and I have to use an expensive carbide drill to redrill the hole in the blade to a larger diameter as well as the FRN handles.

With you being there and the price of shipping you'd want to do as many as possible all at once for one ship charge or at least thats how I'd do it.

I'm trying to picture how I would do this to my Yojimbo...So I would lay the Yojimbo down on a flat surface and gently tap the pivot with a ball peen hammer?

Not with the Yojimbo no! That knife has an adjustable pivot peening it is not going to get you anywhere. Use a torx wrench and adjust it.

The only ones that peening may help with are the ones that are pinned.

Then, as I said its far easier to get too carried away and over do it and also people have cracked handles doing this so its not something I'd just jump right into if you have never done it before.

Usually I will stick a thin old style gillette razor blade down in there on one side of the blade and jam it in far enough to where its toching the pin with the edge if I can get it down that far. Then I'll peen it. This seems to allow just enough space to keep you from over doing things.

But again with your knife this is not a good idea. You could even damage the head or knock it off the screw doing that.
