Dang it, somebody done bought my trusty ash handled EDC from that feller in Nawth Cackalacky. What's a poor swab to do? Aaargh, done ground the blade, and cut and drilled the hunk of ash for a handle. This evening, there'll be much sawing, filing, grinding, whittling, cussing, sanding, more cussing, and maybe a tot of rum here and there as the silly thing comes together. Unusual blade, 5 3/4", pointy sharp, and scandi ground bevels like a long puukko. Pics of finished knife to come. Old Thumbcutter don't wander off too far without his trusty "rib tickler". ;)

Sarge,
I am sure it will be sweet...It was a bummer that I didnt get in on the last fund raiser...I promised my honeybear I would get her a HOg Island Boa before I bought anything else..

Good luck with it... :D

I guess all you needed was a good excuse to make a second generation. LOL.

Aaargh, now I can walk down by the wharfs at night, and any wharf rats that try and "bite" me will get their gizzards sliced. It's a good one, long, lean, and light (blade is 6", handle is 4 1/4"). Got a nice scandi bevel grind on the blade, yes it's ugly sharp, and that ash handle with steel ferrule is strong with plenty to hang onto, while still being nicely compact and light. I'll make it a good concealment sheath, and them that don't appeal to the gentler side of my nature, will likely find themselves cut up like an onion for the stew pot, Aaargh. Oh, and sorry mateys, this one is staying with me. ;)

Great looking knife. How thick is the blade?

It's 1/8" thick. I have a definite dislike for thick blades on the smaller knives. If my knife won't cut rope, split kindling, lop the heads off of fish after I gut 'em, and, slice a tomato, I don't figure it's much worth a durn. Thick blades can be sharpened up to cut well, but you'll never get 'em to slice like a thinner blade. My Green River knives, Mora, knives, etc., all have relatively thin blades, but I've never busted one by using it as a knife's meant to be used. Whopping 1/4" thick spines on little bitty belt knives may inspire confidence, but at a noticeable trade off in efficiency. I'd love to see a JKM-1 or Kumar Karda with a 1/8" - 5/32" spine, they would be formidable cutters/slicers.

nice. Very nice.

Sadly, my picture taking skills fall well short of the Steve Fergusons out there. But you can take my word on it, this one has a very nice 18th century look and feel to it. :D

'Tis a pretty and sleek offering, that. Blade's very similar to a good pukko; I guess form follows function ...

The handle looks turned, and round. How does that work in your hand? I've always appreciated something out of round (rectangle, octagon, oval, egg shape, etc.) just so it doesn't need to be gripped so hard.

I also like knives at about that 1/8" thickness, for all the reasons you've given. I've wondered, Sarge, whether the way you temper them still leaves any flex in so thin a blade, or if you want them to be quite stiff.

Perhaps, but YOU have a song:

The Pirate Song
Sixteen men on a dead man's chest...yo ho ho and a bottle of rum

(Captain) Avast there mates, ye're sailin' with Long John Black Beard, Peg-Leg, Patch-Eye Hook, scourge of the bounding main. Bloodthirstiest, black-heartiest pirate captain ever sailed the seven seas, ha, ha, ha! What say ye we hoist the Jolly Roger, heel over the yonder Spanish galleon. Lay a few broadsides agin' her timers, swing over on these here lanyards with our cutlasses in our teeth cut 'em to ribbons and split the booty. What say ye to that, me hearties? Heh! Ha, ha, ha, ha!

(Twit) I don't like it....

(Captain) You don't like it?

(Twit) I don't like it and I don't wanna do it. It's tacky,...tacky, tacky...and don't look at me that way

(Captain) Well, if you don't like it, what do you want?

Chorus I want to sing and dance, I want to sing and dance
I want to be a pirate in the Pirates of Penzance
Wear me silver-buckled slippers and me tight shiny pants
I want to sing and dance

(Captain) You want to sing and dance, heh! You don't like plundering, aye? Well, shiver me timbers 'ow 'bout treasuring, huh? Rubies, emeralds and pearls, gold doubloons and British sovereigns. Silver chalices encrusted with diamonds and jewels, necklaces and bracelets of every shape and size, fit for the crown heads of Europe, aye? And all buried in a pirate's chest and I just happen to know where. How about that me bloodthirsty buckos, heh? Ha, ha, ha!

(Twit) I don't like it.....

(Captain) You don't like it?

(Twit) I don't like it and I don't want it....

(Captain) He don't want it

(Twit) And I won't do it...I'm an artiste

(Captain) An artiste, well mister artiste, what do you want?

Chorus I want to sing and dance, I want to sing and dance
I want to be a pirate in the Pirates of Penzance
Wear me silver-buckled slippers and me tight shiny pants
I want to sing and dance

(Captain) Now, listen hear! This ain't no floating Gilbert and Sullivan show, you know for some little flittin' tinkerbell. This here be a black-hearted pirate ship and I would have you keel-hauled if you weren't me own flesh and blood you little twit! So you don't like plunderin' aye?.....

(Twit) I don't like it.....

(Captain) And you don't want no treasurin' ah?.....

(Twit) I don't want it.....

(Captain) And you probably don't want no groggin' and revelin' and wrenchin' and rummin' either I suppose?

(Twit) Well, deep down....you want to know the truth? It's not me, I don't want it.....

(Captain) Well, what do you want...as if I didn't already bleein know?

(Twit) I want to sing and dance and.....

(Captain) I know, I know...and wear your tight little shiny pants. Huh! Okay...we'll all sing and dance (pirates grumble)... I said we'll all sing and dance (pirates grumble)... Or you'll walk the plank,...one - two - free

(Chorus in pirates' voices)
Chorus I want to sing and dance, I want to sing and dance
I want to be a pirate in the Pirates of Penzance
Wear me silver-buckled slippers and me tight shiny pants
I want to sing and dance

(Over chorus, you hear the Captain and twit's voice say)
(Twit) I like it....I like it

(Captain) I kinda like it me own self

(Twit) Thought you would

Sixteen men on a dead man's chest...yo ho ho and a bottle of rum

(Twit) I don't like rum...

(Captain) You don't like rum?

(Twit) Well no, actually...well, I might like a little Perrier

(Captain) A little Perrier?

(Twit) With a lime in it...

(Captain) A lime in it?..... He wants a lime in it.....

(Twit) Well, do you have any Escargot?

(Captain) Escar..what?

(Twit) What's the soup today?...

(Captain) Soup!?

(Twit) Might have a bit of a salad too!...

(Captain) Well, how about a bleeding fingerbowl?

(Twit) Maybe a croissant!...Is that right? Those French make everything so hard! Why didn't they just call it a bun?

(fade out)

sort of...:o

Kismet, your a nut. :D ;)

Sarge, Love the knife. Thin cuts so well. I used one of yours just today to skive the end of some rattan that I was wrapping a wooden scabbard with. Good knife.

IF the things didnt COST so much!!! GRRRR!!!;)

Sarge,
On the subject of blade thickness...Around what length would you say that 1/4" spines on blades are called for?? Just curious;)

It's not purely a question of length, so I can't give you figure there. A knife is a tool, for a tool to work properly form must follow function. A chopping tool benefits from added weight either as a result of increased thickness, size, shape, or a combination of those. But you don't chop a tomato, you don't chop a stringer of fish to get 'em ready for the skillet, and you don't set a juicy steak on the table in front of you and start chopping away. A knife used primarily for cutting, slicing, and piercing, does not necessarily need the strength, weight, and thickness of a chopping tool. In fact, those things can detract from it's efficiency, making it at best a marginal tool for those functions it should be most suited for by it's very size/shape configuration.

Here's a useful analogy; Making every blade thick, regardless of size/intended function, would be like taking a football team and giving every player on it the weight/build of the stoutest lineman. That ain't going to get you to the Super Bowl.

So, it's not a simple matter of how long, it's purely a question of what that blade is designed to do that should determine it's relative thickness.

Sarge,
That there is a thing of beauty.

Thanks Dave, it's a style I've grown fond of toting. It'll cut a fishing pole down on the river bank, or carve a roast at the feast table with equal aplomb, and it's very "stabby" (I like stabby :D ).

Tom asked how that style handle works in the hand, it works good. That groove placed towards the end of the handle is situated so the little finger curls right into it and locks there, giving a better grip in a thrust. The handle looks round, but it's actually a rounded oval cross section (can't do that on a lathe, but careful carving/sanding can give a lathe turned look to it). The scandi grind (aka sabre grind) looks good on this one, and cuts well too. I really like the way this one turned out, but my next one will be even better. ;)
