Fellow members,
I have a custom folder from Roy Helton which I purchased a number of years ago. It came with mismatched India stag scales and over time one of the scales has shrunk considerably. I would like some recommendations of a knifemaker who would be able to change out the mismatched scale with a matching stag scale or else change out both scales with either stag or mammoth ivory. I contacted Mr Helton and he is retired and no longer works on knives. He provided me with the name of a fellow knifemaker from central California where he used to live, however that person does not work on other peoples knives. The folder is 4.75 inches closed and has bead blasted titanium bolsters. Does anyone know of a knife maker who has done this type of work for them and who might be willing to take on this small project?

Thank you,

I would just mention that this is no small project. The profile of the scales is finished while attached to the knife , along with the liners and backspacer. The blending of the scales into the bolsters is usually done in the same manner. It is likely that almost every component of the knife will need to receive some type of refinishing. I would expect 2-5 hours depending on the construction of the knife. You will likely not find a maker who is willing to work on someone else's knife but, I have seen repair guys at gun shows.

I don't know if you're still looking for somebody to do this, but there are several guys that hang out in the traditional forum that regularly swap out scales on slipjoints. They might be willing to work on other knives as well. Look for a member named glennbad. He does fantastic work.

Cory,
Thank you for the tip. I was finally able to locate a knifemaker who was able to do the job. The knife is now back in my regular rotation.
