Replacement scales or Buck 283 (??)

Hi all,

A friend of mine has carried a Buck 283 on his keychain for years and it broke this week. The back rivet pulled out of the back of the scales. My friend gave the knife to me. I'd like to fix the knife if possible. I know this is an inexpensive knife but I hate to throw a perfectly good blade away. Is it possible to get replacement scales? Maybe I can make some scales? What do you think?

Making new scales could be a fun project! I have no idea how you'd do it, but I'll gladly watch for progress pics.

Alternatively, you could try calling Buck's service department and telling them your story. They might be able to keep the blade and put a new handle on it.

$13.48 on Buck's Web Specials page. Buy 8 and get free shipping. You can then one-up your friend that gave you a broken knife by giving him a new one. The rest you can consider as early Christmas gift shopping for all your other buddy's.

That's not a bad idea at all. One time I got a bunch of Buck 110 LT's on clearance. I felt like the Johnny Appleseed of Buck knives that Christmas.

It'd still be cool if you could find a way to salvage the blade, but that's probably because I hate throwing away a tool that possibly, maybe, perhaps has a little bit of use left in it. Let us know how it goes.
