I'm a do-it-yerself'er and I just scored a great user FFBM. I've really missed having one since I sold the last one and this will become my main big blade.
I think though I would like to put some wood scales on it and I really like the hollow rivets.
Anyone know what material is used, what the flaring tool is and where I could get these? Or do others just make their own tools?

Is there a thread somewhere where someone did this step-by-step?
If not and I get the materials I'll do it.

Thanks

There are lots of different woods that you can use for the for scalse.
As for flaring he rivets that s a set of dies you have to get. There are lots of sites that you can get them from.

I am a woodworker so I will probably grab some scraps from work. (nice scraps)
For material I was primarily referring to the "rivets".
I have tried googling this but I'm not sure what words or name to type in.

Please let us know how it turns out, I really enjoy seeing the mods that some of the guys do here.

Good luck and keep us posted

If you are going to use wood scales then I would buy 1/4" aluminium tubing, the stainless is hard to flare and could crack your wood.

Thanks for that tip. That would be a very unpleasant mistake. :)
btw I loved the Jarrah scales you did on that ASH.

You need .035 wall 1/4 stainless or brass tubing. I have even used copper to get the dark patina look over time. Take 2 10/32. 82 degree tapered head screws, grind off the threads so it will fit into tubes. Put in good vise and flair evenly! Its really not hard, if you have any questions. I'm here. J

Oh yeah, Jeremy knows how to do it, too! :o

Thanks for the offer to help. I may be in touch... probably about the stage right before I get frustrated and accidentally break something...:p
(or more likely, hurt myself... wait.. after I hurt myself is usually when I ask for help. :))
I have done a few re-handles, take a look at these:

Thanks! It was the recent thread about the SAR5 you did that got me thinking so it's really nice to see these others. I have some weekend reading to do!
