Replacing an old veteran...

I have decided to replace my aging Benchmade:

file-22.jpg

I have been carrying it for around 15 years, and it has served me well. However, I find myself wanting to get a knife with a stronger locking mechanism, as the lock-back mechanism is not the best in the industry. I have had an old SOG lock-back fail on me, and do not want to see that ever happen again (it hurt!)

I'm wanting a frame-lock (or at least a liner-lock), and would prefer a flipper. The ZT line is calling my name, but the prices are not.

I am wanting a folder that basically acts like a fixed blade when deployed. The Ti frame-locks are pretty much the best I have found. In addition to a strong mechanism, I want a hilt, or more precisely, a faux hilt (since a REAL hilt would prevent the knife from folding). This can be achieved through the design of the handle (like my Benchmade shown above), or through the design of the blade (flipper blades, etc...).

The ZT I like is above $200. I would like to find one that is less than $100. I am willing, but not likely, to go above $100 if it is a good value.

Blade steel is important, but not critical. I don't need the absolute best or latest/greatest steel. I do, however, want it to have decent steel. Coatings are not necessary. I don't mind a bare blade.

I found a couple that I absolutely love, but they are well above my price range.

R.J. Martin's knives:

I just really like the design of these knives, with the Ti Frame-lock and the flipper design giving the handle a faux hilt.

I found a Kershaw Volt II, which is a R.J. Martin design knife, and snatched it up.

However, it was a bit smaller than I had hoped. Here it is next to my Benchmade:

The handle is just too short for me, much less the blade is pretty short. I was expecting the whole knife to be scaled up a bit. From this experience, I think I am not going to be satisfied with something less than a 4" blade, or at the very least a 3.75" blade. That should produce a knife that would fit my hand.

The Junkyard Dog is at the low end of my wish list, as it is described here:

The ZT 0300 is at the top end of my list, as described below:

Is there something else I should look at? Something that would get me closer to what I'm looking for between the Junkyard Dog and the ZT 0300?

If you dig RJ's offerings ,check out the Kershaw Groove. It is a large-ish folder , flipper , framelock , steel handle no Ti , great blade steel and the best warranty in the knife industry.
Two G10 colors to choose from too.

How about a Cold Steel Recon 1 or American Lawman with the Tri-Ad lock? You have been carrying a lock back for awhile and the new Tri-Ad lock may be the strongest Lock on the Market! If not then there are several Benchmades or Kershaws that you would like. The ZTs are great but it may be tough to find one in your price range if you want the 4 inch blade! GOOD LUCK! Kevin :D

Get a Kershaw Rake - KershawGuy on here has some blems for like $65 and mine had a few misprints but was flawless otherwise.

It was a "just got to have it since its composite blade" knife for me, but its ended up being one of my primary carried knives - it fits the hand perfectly, has a Sandvic steel blade that's fused with D2 on the edge like the JYD, and its a flipper - its assisted, so if you don't like that, then you might have an issue with it. It is only 3 1/2" blade, but its got a beefy handle with that Ken Onion perfect fit.

If that won't work, check out the secondary market for a Tyrade - very nice and you get your choice between Ti Frame lock or Liner-lock/G10 (both come with fused 154CM/D2 blades I believe).

I love that Tyrade. Too bad it is the same price as the ZT knives.

The more I think about it, the more I think I'll just go with the Junkyard Dog. It looks to be a nice knife meeting nearly all my criteria. Knifeworks has it for under $50.

ZT 0200 would be excellent. about your price range, and it is tougher than you will ever need it to be. if you get the JYDII, which, by the way, is an excellent knife, get the composite version. it may not seem worth the money, but it is totally worth it.

I love the look of a well used blade!

Find something you like from the Kershaw/ZT line-up, you really can’t go wrong. If you want big, but not the price tag of the 0300 series check of the 0200.

Plus Kershaw/ZT has the best warranty and customer service in the business (should you ever need it).

Stay safe serving those warrants:thumbup:

The JYD is a great knife and excellent value for money.

I know that you said that you want a flipper but you really should consider a Spyderco Military.
It is one of the best made factory knives on the planet and at around $140-00 is a great buy.

Good luck with your search and when you decide post pics:)

Look at the griptilian. You can get one for under 100. Its a little under your length with a 3.5 inch blade but i feel its a great size for edc.

I went ahead and ordered a Junkyard Dog. If it works for me, my search will be over for now. If it doesn't "cut" it, then I'll re-visit the various recommendations and go from there. If I can get into a new knife for <$50, I will be thrilled.

Thanks for all the suggestions! If you have more, keep 'em coming.
