Replacing AVG Free?

Been using AVG free for a long time now (about 3-4 years) and it seems to do well. Rarely do I have a virus problem, and when I do back-up scans with various online scanners (such as F-Secure or McAfee) they don't usually pick up anything AVG doesn't. But, my laptop is older running XP with 2gigs ram on a 1.46ghz Celeron cpu. I run a tight ship, so to speak, but since I've have never once reformatted and reinstalled its getting a little boggy. Wondering if anybody knows of a free (or close to it) AV program which will be lighter on resources than AVG and more effective? Been out of the computer game for a while now, preocupied with school and work, and I just need something that will work well. Maybe AVG is as good as the resource-minded av's go, I don't know.

You could try Microsoft's Security essentials - antivirus/antispyware, free download. I've been using it for a little while, and it's worked well.

go with avast antivirus free version. i have been using it over 6 years and it works great. i use comodo firewall along with it and it helps quite a bit too. to check my system for anything i run dr web cureit free version.

Avira is getting top reviews in the freeware anti-virus world right now. Has an annoying popup everyday but that's easy to click through and I've heard it can be disabled.

Avira and Avast! are both good alternatives. I use one on each of our two laptops.

Avast is good. I've been using one for 6 years or so. During that time I've gotten maybe 3 times false virus alert. Its good, free and relatively light, when compearing like the F-Secure or similar commercial programs.

Avast is good. Depending on what you mean by 'close to free' NOD 32 might be a good choice. It has a very small footprint and is $40 for the AV only version.

I have used Avira Anti-Vir Personal for over two years and have not had one single issue. It works, uses low system resources, and is free.

Been running Avast for several years now ever since getting rid of Norton memory and resources hog software. No problems with Avast and I have never had any virus related problems yet....knocking on wood:)

I'll also recommend avast. I got a virus recently and AVG couldn't get rid of it. I downloaded avast, ran a scan, gone.

For me it always comes out avast free as my best choice, try it for a couple of weeks.

Well did the switch ti Avast a few days ago... Two things I noticed immediately.

1. Overall system performance increased. Hopefully this is due to more efficient programming and not less thorough scanning.

2. NO SCHEDULER. This is a major drawback, with how hectic life is the last thing I want to worry about is whether or not I've manually scanned lately.

I'll give it a shot, though. Like I said overall performance took a nice jump, especially boot time and firefox browsing.

Look into WinPatrol, it is not a anti-virus, to prevent any unwanted programs from installing as well as identifying spyware. I use it in concert with my anti-virus and it works pretty well.

I install Avast on any computer I 'tune-up' for friends and family. With that and Spybot Search and Destroy, I never have to worry about malicious scripts, trojans, etc.

On my personal computer, I don't run any antivirus or spyware protection at all and never have. I still have yet to have a problem. Then again, it's a Mac... :D
