Replacing My Lost EDC

Well, Thursday at work I lost my Benchmade Stryker. I pulled it out and opened a package with it, then never saw it again. Asked around, and got a bunch of "nope"s....it even has my name laser etched in the blade! Anyway, I'm going to replace it with a new EDC. Right now I'm pretty set on an Emerson CQC-7BW BTS. I'm pretty hard on knives, so I need something tuff.

Requirements -

Strong!
Under $200
Partially serrated
Pretty traditional looking

Other ideas I had were the Paramilitary 2 and Military, but can't find them with serrations.

I looked at the ZT line up and nothing caught my eye.

Help! I need to order tonight or tomorrow!

If you like the CQC-7, you might also look at the CQC-7AW (drop point, V-grind). Personally, I like that one more than the tanto ones. The Mini-Commander and Horseman are a little over $200, but they're worth checking out too. Of the Emersons I've handled, the Mini-Commander is the one I like most.

There are also several variations of the Blur with serrations with both drop point and tanto blades.

Or if you want to get another Benchmade, the large Griptilian, M390 Barrage, or HK 14715 are worth a look.

If you want a large-ish Spyderco with combo edge, there's the Manix 2 (both the lightweight or G10 versions).

That is one reason why I don't like using expensive knives to EDC. If I used a benchmade for EDC and lost it knowing it was probably stolen at my work place I'd freak out because that's not like losing a $20 dollar edc knife.

In fact that is probably why it ended up missing in the first place. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that it wasn't a $10 dollar swiss army knife.

Someone even if they don't know benchmade probably just realized it was a quality knife and probably expensive and yanked it because things don't disappear.

Yeah. We should all carry $10 knives because someone might steal it. Why not address the OP's question.

Emersons are pretty cool knives. It seems like you've done some ample research and found what you wanted, I'd get the Emerson if nothing from zt or Kershaw or spyderco tickles your fancy. You may want to check out kizer or reate if you can live without partial serrations.

I feel for you, same thing happened to me about 5 yrs ago with my 35 dollar SAK. Since my income isn't much I considered it a serious loss. Didn't freak though, when that kind of stuff happens it isn't worth making a scene. If it was misplaced it'll show up, if it was stolen it won't.

If your interested in emerson check out the mini cqc8. That blade caught my eye. I just bought a zt 0562, really like it. If ou want inexpensive, I love my buck vantage pro. S30v and only paid $65, new.

Check out a hogue the only problem is no serrations. They look like some tough knives and are right in your price range. May i ask why u need serrations? Is it a particular task or just preference?

Thanks for all the responses. I will not buy a cheap EDC knife, because you get what you pay for, I believe. I'm kinda over Benchmades, except the AFO II, but I don't want an auto. Serrations are necessary as I cut rope and plastic banding a lot, and I find them handy to have, with little downfall. I like tanto points, so the Emerson got a plus there too. I do like the Endura 4, I had a full serrated one that was great, but it got left in a cheap motel in Reno a long time ago... I'd buy another, but I prefer something other than the lock back.

You don't have to carry anything you don't want. But if you choose to EDC a $200- $1,000 dollar knife don't feel too bad if something happens to it.

Part of the purpose of EDC I see people mention is that if it gets lost or stolen that the knife they chose to EDC wouldn't bother them if they lost it.

A knife someone EDC's should be easily replaceable. Also I know nothing about knives in his budget to comment on too much.

I full understand the consequences of carrying an expensive knife. That is why I put a $200 cap on this. I've lost two expensive knives in my life. Not good, but not awful. As bad as I want a Sebenza, I won't risk it with one of those lol

I guess I'll give my vote to Emerson. I don't know about "traditional looking," but the mini commander or mini cqc-15 partially serrated may fit your need under your budget.

It does not matter what you buy, just make it expensive. The more you spend the quicker the Stryker will show up.

For the last four yrs, I've carried two Umnumzaans, two large Sebbies, and presently a mid-tech Brad Southard AVO that costs more than the CRK's. A knife with a Well-Designed clip should not get lost from your pocket. The only knife that I can recall losing was one that had no clip and just sloshed around in my pocket until it finally slid out and was gone...forever. Bummer...that!

My local antiques shop carries random high end knives that are all new in the box. I bought myself a Spyderco Lum Tanto Sprint Run folder there a while back. They have a brown G10 Emerson CQC-7 limited there that I'm pretty sure is only going for $150 right now. I can go check it out for you tomorrow and get some pics. If you like it I can pick it up for you and send it your way? It's also brand new and unused. They had a few Benchmades and a ZT the last I was in as well.

Save yourself the heartache and $ and get yourself a blur knife, beat on it and save up for your next big purchase.

You already lost one, if you lose another and its s blu no problem, if you don't the Blur will give you a great knfie on the budget, and you'll have 2 good Knives including one that's more ideal to take out to questionable locales where the risk of loss is higher.

By all means buy the Emerson. The 7 is a wonderful knife. IMO, it's better and certainly 'tougher' than any of the others you mentioned. They'll pry my Super 7 from my cold, dead hands. :)

You didn't say if you've owned Emersons before--if not, be advised there is a break in period and a little tweaking may be required before you fully bond with it. Remember that if you buy one. For the most part, Emersons 'evolve' over a bit of time following purchase.

Another suggestion would be their micro-Commander. I continue to be amazed at what a wonderful EDC this knife makes. True its blade is listed at 2.9" but, as I've posted here before, it's the most deceiving length I"ve ever owned--not only visually but in use, I swear I never see that knife as anything less than about a 3.25" blade. I always felt the regular and Uber Commanders are nearly too much in the way of blade mass. At the micro size, however, it's awesome.

You want a rugged, lifetime knife....stick with an Emerson.

Ever looked at this thread? http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...-Which-knife-or-knives-are-you-carrying-today

OP, take a look at the Spyderco Manix 2 also. They are available in partial serrated and are one of my favorite heavier use knives.

Isn't the Manix the one where I discovered I could pinch the scales together when open and nearly make them touch??? No liners, right?
