Replacing rivets?

I am in the process of cleaning up this old chef's knife (1 before and 2 after shots) and 2 of the 3 rivets holding the scales to the tang have lost 1 side, so the scales are starting to pull away from the tang.

(the ruler is not really curved - that's my crappy digital camera again)

Now, this is a $3 yardsale knife, so I don't have a lot invested in it - but it is one of my favorite knives in the kitchen. I am just starting to learn about knives and I like repairing things (and I'm pretty handy) so I'd like to take a whack at replacing the rivets myself. (I'm half way expecting that I'll end up needing to make new scales but that's a problem for another day).

What's the procedure for getting the handle apart? Any pitfalls to watch out for?

Use heat gun to soften the epoxy a little, it'll be easier after that, be careful though, epoxy will start melting @ about 300-400 degrees. While it's still hot put on some gloves and start trying to shift the scales in different directions to loosen them from the tang.

Then you can kill some time and even do something like this, maybe ;)
