Has anyone tried to replace the sage 3 back spacer with standoffs? Was thinking about removing the back spacer. Can it be done without affecting performance? Any thoughts?

Replacing Sage 3 Backspacer with Stand-offs

The front part of the backspacer houses the locking mechanism. That part of the backspacer would need to remain intact or you would need to design something to takes its place. You could probably cut the backspacer and remove the rear portion, but IMO that would probably look funny.
