replacing scales on old Schrade switchblade

Hello folks,

A friend at work, when he found out that I was taking up knife making/smithing, asked if I could fix up an old Schrade switchbalde that had belonged to his father-in-law that just recently passed away. I said I'd see what I could do but told him I'd need to see what kind of a job it would entail, as I'm still a pretty green knife maker.

Does anyone know of a good reference source for doing such a repair? From the looks of the knife, I think it will need to be disassembled completely for cleanup and fitting the new scales.

Many thanks,

Hello Dana,

If my memory serves me correctly the old Schrade switchblades were made in the style of a slipjoint folder. I would recommend purchasing this book: The Complete Book of Pocketknife Repair: A Cutler's Manual.

I have this book, and I would recommend it for anyone who is working on or building slipjoints. I will show you the steps involved in disassembling the Schrade and replacing the scales. You will have to do a little modification to the new scales to compensate for the switch blade mechanisms.

Hope this helps. -chris
