i'm thinking of getting a new computer....but i will not put up with vista. can i get one with vista and then replace the OS with XP pro? i can buy a legit retail version of XP pro off of ebay.

would that mess up the machine?

would DX 10 still work?

what about the drivers already installed....would they still be there?

thanks.....Bill

Vista is not the evil thing that you think it is. I think many of the problems have been to install Vista in an older computer. Taking a Vista computer and installing XP is foolish since everything will soon be set up for Vista.

Dell caved to popular demand and is offering systems with XP again, not sure about other vendors

i have yet to hear anything good about Vista to make me think it's necessary

i'm sure you could get by with XP for a few more years, or maybe wait until they come out with the first Service Pack for Vista

You'll lose DX10.

You'll have to download all of the drivers. Some of your systems discs will have drivers for XP, but they'll be older versions and you're much better off with newer drivers. The key drivers will be for your motherboard. If you go with a proprietary board such as many from Dell or any other big production house, you probably won't be able to get motherboard drivers for XP. And your machine will never work right without them.

You'll have to wipe the disk. XP won't install with Vista on the machine or so I've read.

If you know how to set up a computer from scratch, you'll be fine.

I would not worry about DX10 or the lack thereof.

A lot , a lot alot of folks are going to be using XP for some time , myself included.
The only reason you would need DX10 is if you had a game or something that required it , that is a long ways off , by then hopefully most of the bugs will be worked out of Vista.

Nobody is going to make a Vista only software for a loooong time.

The above are right though , just format the HD , get that Vista off and reinstall your copy of XP , do your SP updates and you're off !

Forget about DX10, it's pretty much useless for now. Save your data (on DVD or external drive), format the HDD and install XP Pro.
Vista as it is today is a PITA. Lots of driver and backward compatibility issues.
I'll stay with my XP pro as long as I can, and after that I'll go Linux (CentOS or something). Linux is a PITA too compared to XP, but it's free.

Linux pwns for a lot of stuff, but i'm still not sold as desktop replacement

Ubuntu appears to be getting close though. although i think i still prefer Fedora

Vista sucks. I play wow on my laptop. I was getting 15 fps with vista. I installed XP Pro and am getting 30 at the least. I'll be using xp for as long as microsoft supports it.

Vista is awesome - it's everybody else that's draggin their rears....:D :p

You can dual-boot XP. But you will need a separate drive. Either partition what you've got, or get another hard drive.

The Vista business licenses are supposed to allow XP rollback. This means you could install XP and then upgrade to Vista (without paying for another license) sometime after it stops being complete crap.

It turns out that DX10 *does* work on Windows XP, Microsoft just thought it would be a better idea if you were forced to upgrade to Vista.

And, of course, there is Linux, which is free. :D Dell and Wal*Mart both sell systems with Linux pre-loaded now, but it's generally pretty easy to install yourself afterwards.

Personally what I would do for windows is go ahead and buy the license/whatever, but then just download the popular cracked XP off of the torrent networks (and get it up to speed with autopatcher). The reason I prefer to do this, rather than use the preloaded version, is that the (good) cracked version doesn't come with all that crappy spyware installed. (ironic, huh? :p)

The biggest problem with Vista is that it treats its rightful owner as a dumbass criminal. Vista is so ladden with DRM garbage that you can't get anything done without the stupid thing spying on you.

Plenty of details online but the most comprehensive analysis is here:

If you are buying a PC from a major retailer, just specify XP as your OS of choice. If all you are doing is email/browse/docs, an Ubuntu or Fedora 7 will do just fine.

I totally agree with logastellus. Vista is the "Orwell's 1984 Big Brother" of all OS. I wouldn't trade my XP for a Vista and Vista is the first of more "Big Brother" OS to come.
