the repo had its handle broke, i replaced it with a hickory framing hammer handle from lowes. the head had acouple of nicks but it filed out ok

Been thinking about adding a longer hammer hammer to my Cold Steel Vietnam tomahawk for quite some time.
The handle that Cold Steel puts on theirs is too slick to hold onto, and too short for good leverage. It is designed for Throwing, yet made for combat.
(And it is more of a battle hatchet than a tomahawk as a tomahawk has a different style of eye for the handle to go through.)

I think it needs a good long hammer handle. All the better to hold onto when you want to get angry at something or someone.

How does yours feel in the hand? You like it more than the short thing it came with?

the new handle is 17 inches, it does feel good, the hawk did throw well with its original handle.
planning to clean up the head to a mirror finish and past razors edge, so not sure if i will throw it anymore...lol
so i really cant tell yet if i like it better this way, it does have more reach for sure!
thx and gl

i got the edge to cut paper , but it still got along way to go. i cant find my ammo can with my finishing stones, been looking for apx 3 years too...i know they somewhere.
i put some copper on the handle and butt. my hands are sore form filing and sanding, i figure i aint got any finger prints left on me, the head is good enough for now.

I replaced my handle with a ball pein... I was really shocked at how little wood actually goes into the eye... really tiny. I never got to mess with it much before I sold it.

Still, the longer handle made it much nicer than the "shorty" that it comes with!
