Brief email from AdAstra...good news, more or less.

Thanks... we're OK.

Lost furniture in POD as expected. Moved washer, dryer &
lawnmower into
livingroom...

We got 6 feet surge. Water under house, broke septic pipes
again. I fixed,
again.

Exhausted. 68 mph winds sustained... 200 miles from New
Orleans.

Somebody look out for Mississippi Rifleman. His last post
indicated he was
in the worst-hit area... might post later, I'm bushed.

Thanks for the update, Kis.
I'm glad mike is ok. Battered, but ok. MRM, check in when you can. The cantina takes care of its own. Let us know if we can do anything to help.

Thanks, Kismet. I've seen this repeated over and over; when a good guy gets his life together, as has Ad, all hell breaks out. I'm not sure why. My Christian friends tell me it's God's way of tempering the steel even finer than it already is. Prayers to Ad and all the people in harm's way.

Continuing prayers from Smoke Filled Northeastern Oklahoma!!!! Good to hear that Mike and his wife are okay but now really worried about MR.:(

That is good news. Now we just have to hear from MR. Prayers still going out to all in the Gulf Coast.

Kismet, and everybody,

many thanks.

Katrina painted a worse picture even than I thought. Our beautiful Gulf Coast, from Louisiana to Florida, is... well, Dresden in 1945 comes to mind. Any gamblers in the Cantina? Biloxi used to be a lot of fun. 24 feet of water has changed that. And what isn't making the news are all the little places where real people live, that are obliterated.

Mobile Bay got 10-12 feet, so that says something for the whole Mississippi coast... you may be watching the news but no one will see the reality for weeks & months... camera crews can't travel, the coastal roads aren't there.

Seeing the slide of New Orleans into savagery.... I have been through 4 of these things now, and this is what I have seen. I have seen hurricanes bring out the best in people. Neighbors helping each other, people working together as a team. "Tom needs help getting a tree off his roof, let's go help him," that kind of thing. "We need to get the pilings out of Travis's yard", "Maggie needs help" - this is what I remember. No one said, "Hey, cops can't catch us- let's go steal." Is this "the best in people" in New Orleans?

Some looting is justified by hunger. You or I would loot to feed a child. But what I've seen on TV being stolen goes beyond that. And a cop was shot.

Maybe a hurricane is a giant polarizer. What was good to begin with becomes all good. And latent evil, in turn, gets a chance to take the stage for a day.

Sorry for the rant. I'm beyond tired. Lost some furniture we didn't have the time & strength to move. Bridge closed at 8pm that nite, we made it thru at 5 of. Katrina could have jogged farther east; you never know with these things.

Many thanks to the good people of the Cantina for caring about our lost paradise in the South.

Hurricane Ivan- Cat. 3, 130 mph- Sept. 16, 2004.
Hurricane Dennis- Cat. 3, 120 mph- July 10, 2005.
Hurricane Katrina- Cat. 4, 160 mph- Aug. 29, 2005.

All in one year. Some of my neighbors' sanity is in question... don't worry about mine; you can't lose what you never had.

Upbeat and steadfast as always, Mike. I think Munk's idea of tempered steel is accurate in this case.

Good to hear from you, Mike. I'm very sorry to hear of yet another pounding to your home.

You're still on my list, hang in there.

Ad Astra,

It is great to hear from you. This whole NO thing will be a can of worms that we will be talking about for the rest of our lives. As far as I am concerned, all of it has been a shock to the system. The bahavior of the people, the behavior and negligence of our government at all levels, and the behavior of our alleged allies has left much to be desired for. There are going to be many people headed to jail on this, and the looters are going to be the least of those.

With that trend, he may soon be going supersonic.

So your walls cave in before you hear the roar of the wind.

What does happen, just before the eye hits, is that your ears pop- just like going up in a plane- from the low pressure. Nobody tells you that.

I remember that from Hurricane Andrew, Cat. 5, 150?70? mph- August 24, 1992.
Another wrecked home. They found asbestos that time, and I had to move.

I was in South Miami for that one. So was Azis & Sarge, I think from their writings.

Hey Mike,

Glad to hear you're back and doing ok.

It's interesting to hear from someone local as well, instead of just the news. I was wondering about all the small towns and communities that no one is talking about as they're so consumed with NO.

I'm sure at this very moment there are people struggling for their lives that we aren't even aware of. But, I suppose maybe that is true in all times...

Anyway, glad to know you're safe.
