the hilt is off center with the blade so it makes me wonder. i've researched a bit online and cant seem to find any with the crown on the pommel. Any markings that it would have had appear to have been polished off above the cross guard.

thoughts?

I have never seen one with that style of pommel, but I obviously haven't seen everyone ever made. :D Neither of mine have an end cap like that.

On my monitor, it "appears" that the pommel cap is threaded and can be removed. Is it threaded? Or is it just a shadow I see right at the base of the pommel cap?

Not threaded.... I'll post a few more pics when I get home (11:30 eastern)

A long time ago I had a sword similar to this one. I never did get a solid history on it but I was told it was a "cadet's sword". Maybe try a search using that term for more info.

ever search i've run leads back to either French or American Artillery Sword but none with a pommel like the one on mine.

My thoughts would lean towards a bad reproduction of the American m1832. The US M1832 had the fish scale grip, three fullers, and an eagle bearing a shield on the pommel. The French 1816 with the fish scale grip, three fullers and a cockerel on the pommel.

While it is possible this might be a fraternal or cadet example of these, the attempt at an eagles on the pommel kind of says it all.

Without a match in a book (and I don't see it in the American fraternal "bible", your guess is as good as mine.

Cheers

I always tell people that when the hard steel blade has extensive wear and damage, but the soft brass fittings are nearly pristine that tells you a lot. It tells you that it is a fake/replica.

Not one thing on that sword looks real.
