Has anyone reprofiled their Southard using diamond rods on the Sharpmaker ?

I know 204P is a great steel and holds an edge well, I just wish the edge was a little thinner for better cutting.

If you have reprofiled the edge, is the thinner angle on the edge making it cut better ?

If you reprofiled the edge using the EP or WE, how does the thinner edge cut ?

Or with the thick blade on the Southard, is reprofiling the edge with a SM not a good idea.

Comments.

Mine has been reprofiled on my wicked edge to about 25 degrees inclusive and the edge holds up just fine, cts-204p is some good stuff. The blade is still thick though, and that hollow grind means it still binds a bit when doing things like slicing apples.

I thinned mine down just a little with the sharpmaker diamond rods, seemed to improve performance. I'll have to put a really nice bevel on there one of these days.

I was hoping someone could do a regrind on it, would love to thin out the whole blade. Krein is not doing regrinds anymore, though. And there is some concern that the regrind would not get rid of the hollow.

I have not sharpened a southard, but the sharpmaker is VERY slow to reprofile. It is great for touch ups but I would recommend something different for reprofilig. I use a WE, it works great

Serious question:

What is the difference between "re-profile" and "re-grind"or are they the same thing?

I thought profile referred to the overall shape of the blade and grind referred to the cutting edge?

That's been my understanding of it as well. When you "reprofile" a blade, all you are doing is changing the angle of the grind, or at least that's how I've been using it. a "regrind" for me at least is changing the entire grind, be it from hollow to flat, or even thinning out the flat to get it extremely thin behind the edge. I guess a a reprofile would only really affect the bevel, whereas a regrind can affect the entire height blade, if that makes sense.

Logically, you're probably correct, but with reference to knives you have it backwards. Reprofiling is changing the angle of the edge bevel, regrinding changes the whole blade and is usually done to thin out a knife or change the grind from say, a hollow grind to a very thin flat grind.
