I bought a Coldsteel SRK in carbon V few monthes ago for a heavier duty camp knife while away from my normal fixed blades. I bought it cause it was the only fairly large fixed blade I could find worth anythingand got a good price. I got it for round 32 bucks NIB I think. Only I dont really like the edge profile it is very thick has to be close to 30 degrees. I not sure wether to go to a 20 degree V grind or convex the edge. I havn't used it due to no where to camp. I will never use it the way it is the edge is just to thick. What do you think I just tryed convexing this weekend for the first time anf thnik this would be a good canadiate to convex as well?

Yes it would be a good one to convex and will improve its cutting ability greatly. The down side is it will be your first big regrind and it would probably be best to remove the coating.

I got reprofiled edge and yes it did take a while. I cheated a bit I used a 10 inch mill file to get close and finished it with sandpaper. Now I must say that powder coat is the worst part wow that stuff is on there. I took your advice and started removing and for fun wanted to mirror finish it. I am not sure bout that mirror finish the 80 grit isnt even touching those ridges for the powder coat, so might just get the powder coat off and leave it a rough satin finish. I also found something that surprised me. There was some piting under the powder coat near the top bevel pretty disapointed, guess if they cover it up they dont care bout the condtion of the blade. Now it isnt bad but still kind of disapointing. I hope to finish sharpening it soon got to rest the sandpaper a bit its getting tired:D. Thanks for the advice on convexing I was wanting to just need some other input. Any one no a good way to remove the coating besides sandpaper?

I stripped the coating off my SRK with an electric drill and a rotating steelbrush, worked fine..
Then I reground the thing into a kind of Scandi/convex, all the way from the "top"-bevel, and the thing got wicked good as a camp knife...
If you look at the pic in the bottom of my post, you see I`ve done the same thing with my Recon Tant, and that thing is now working like a charm.....

Good luck on your project...

That is funny I did the bout the same thing with a knife I made. I kinda called it the same kind of edge I went from the top to edge and put a micro bevel of round 12 degrees on it. I would love to finish it soon and see what it can do as well. I think the sandpaper got its wind back its ready for round 2

That`s cool, I`ll see if I cant get a picture posted later today of the Tanto and the SRK side by side, they are really much more "friendly" to look at now even though they have a much more "evil" edge, LOL:D
Don`t get as many frightened looks from people when I take my shiny, pretty-looking knife out in the parks and forrests around my place:confused:
