Well after allot of searching and coming up with zip i've come here to ask a question i'm sure has been asked allot before so my apologies up front. I've got an Esee 4 that i've had for a couple of years and am thinking of knocking back the shoulder to make it a better slicer. I guess my first question is for those of you that have done this are you happy with it???. I guess the next question is,,,is using a file to knock back the edge the best way fallowed by 30 degrees and then 40 degrees.l

Thanks
bill

I would use a file on a machete, but for a shorter knife, I'd use sandpaper. Depending on what sharpening system you already have, the angles are up to you. Lay the sandpaper on a mouse pad, leather strop, or even cardboard, IF you want to convex the edge, or round the shoulder. If you just want another angle, maybe attach the sandpaper to your sharpening system's rods, if that's what you have to establish the angle. 320 or 400 grit works well to do this without scarring too bad, then switch to 600 and higher to finish or polish or how ever far you want to go.
I've done this with other knives and machetes, and if done correctly, they will slice better. Machetes cut deeper with less energy.

+1 to what foxx said. getting rid of the shoulder will make a knife cut better. i would try a convex edge.
