This is my first Swamp Rat knife so I want to make sure I don't mess anything up. I used my RMD over the wkd and dinged the edge on a brick. The factory edge is quite obtuse, much more so than I am used to or prefer. I like a 30 degree bevel on my knives which don't get convex'd. Is this okay for this knife/steel combo? I assume it is, I just thought it might be worth asking for a general consensus. Not that it matters since I already started! :p

Also, how about a convex edge? Anybody using them on Bussekin knives?

I ground mine down by hand. Took awhile but was worth it. my edge is slightly convex because it was done by hand but i see no reason that 30* would be a problem

Mine is going pretty well. I am using an extra coarse diamond stone and it's still taking a while. I hopefully won't have to remove too much metal to get it there though. We'll see!

I have convexed many of my Rat users. A convex edge is very much at home on SR-101. I do tend to thin them out a bit versus what they came from the factory with. So far, I usually reduce the overall edge angle by about 1/3, and that seems to be a pretty good sweet spot. I still need to do my RS and my new RMD Bowie. I have some good pictures of a couple of my convex jobs here.

Wow your bevels are amazing. I just finished with my RMD and to be honest, it looks pretty horrible! I guess using the DMT Aligner isn't the most accurate way to do things. My bevels are really wide, at least twice as wide as yours. I thought I was putting a roughly 15 degree per side bevel on it, but when I then tried smoothing it out on my Sharpmaker using the 30 degree side, I wasn't hitting the edge. I must have put something less than a 15 degree bevel on it. I remedied that by swapping over to the 40 degree side of the Sharpmaker and putting a fairly heavy "micro-bevel" on it. It's shaving sharp, but it sure ain't pretty!

I wish I had a place to setup a belt sander. I really do like convex grinds the best. Oh well, it is a user and I guess I can always sell it if it bothers me.

Hmmm, now I am wondering if I should just stick with working a 40 degree bevel on my other Bussekin knives as they come in?

Yep, other then the choils this is my only gripe about Swamp Rats. Why have awesome steel and an awesome heat treat if you don't make use of it in your edge geometry.
