ive spent lik 1hr already on my mini-manix with mi sharpmaker on the mid stick and its done nearly next to nothing anyideas in only reprofing as there is a tiny chip but im a perfectionist

Try a diamond to get the chip out and then shape it using that as well. Finish up on a fine stone or the ceramics.

EZELap or DMT makes a great little sharpener that I use quite a bit for reprofiling but if you don't want to shop on line Wal-Mart and some sporting goods stores sell little hand held sharpening diamonds for outdoorsman. In our Wal-Mart they are in with the fishing, knives, and other such outdoors stuff somewhere near the ammo usually and they are cheap. I believe they are Smith's Dimond sharpeners but don't hold me to that.

I did my first "my edge" on S30V just a while ago. Used the Lansky Diamond stones and it went a little faster than I thought it would. Maybe an hour or so doing other thing in between.

After going through the coarse, medium, and fine stones, I then went to a Medium regular stone and then a 600 fine stone. Finished it with a few strops and it smoothly shaved afterwards. Was a Buck 110. Working on "MY" first edge on a Swamp Rat folder S30V right now. Not far into it and getting sidetracked. Might take a while but will post results.

get diamonds. i have 30 and 60micron, but to get really sharp you will probably need finer plates/stones

With a coarse stone then it should take more than minutes to regrind an edge. Just go really coarse, like a 200 silicon carbide waterstone. It will reduce the edge angle on a S30V folder so fast that you can addidently regrind it while sharpening if you are not careful.

i was thinking about SiC too for a while but the only i could find was "crystolon" from norton and they were quite expensive 50€ or so. how fast does SiC stones wear down?

The waterstones wear very fast, so much so that a single edge adjustment with produce a visble different in flatness if you worked just the center of the stone.

Buy a cheapo "puck" type coarse stone intended for axes and shop tools. Don't worry about the edge until you get the shoulders of the blade where you want them then finish with your SM. :D

thanks heepss for all your help specially cliff and another thing im in australia so we dont have walmart i had to even buy the mini-manix overseas and have it shipped here but i must say its an excellent knife thanks again every one i really appricate it you guy are the people i turn to for advice when i need help and you lot have never let me down thanks

Most hardware stores have really coarse stones, you can also use sandpaper, just get a grade designed to cut metals not wood.

The edge pro coarse stones wear very fast, so much so that it is often recommended you buy more than one of the coarse one. I would generally recommend you just use a larger benchstone for the initial shaping.
