Repurposed an old hatchet handle

So the haft that came on my hatchet was broken at the shoulder. It was a good play toy for my son when I was in the garage working on stuff, but other than that it was serving no purpose. Well today I grabbed my 3# sledge and noticed the head was loose. I tapped the butt on the bench and smaked the wedge a bit. It came right loose again. So I decided to try that broken hatchet handle as a sledge handle. I just cut some off the front to make it the right size, cut a new wedge slot, made a wedge out of some myrtle I had laying around and you know what, it sure is a darned comfortable handle! I find that holding it out on the end positons the head for harder blows and when turned around and choked up it works well for more delicate work.

Let me know what you think...

I may just go get a metal wedge to add to the handle to help fill the eye a little bit better, but it feels rock solid for now.

Looks good.

Why would you? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. What do you hope to improve upon if the handle is already "rock solid"?

You can always add a metal wedge later, should the need arise.

And an old piston make a great ash tray for stogies.

Can you tell I like to reuse old things?! You should see what I did with an old hacksaw blade. Not having much money has taught me to be thrifty and resourceful as well as how to repair almost anything.
