Repurposing Cigar Tubes

Cigars are good things. Some of the good things come in aluminum tubes. Since I normally throw the tubes away when I smoke, I got to thinking what a waste it is to throw those things away. Already posted this in BCUSA, but thought I'd throw it in here as well!

It's pretty cramped as is, but any ideas? Maybe something that I have in there that doesn't need to be, or something that might work better?

:) Nice to see this, the very first two survival kits I made as a child 45 years ago were one for pocket carry in a cigar tube and a larger one in a small Tate & Lyle Golden Syrup can! :)

I'd cut down that pencil. Have you got fish-hooks in there? How about a birthday candle? Put some nail-varnish on those matches and maybe put in a small piece of emery cloth for the striker. Tiny LED torch. How about some potassium permangenate and/or some fatwood shavings and a couple of iodine tablets? Bit of snare wire? Magnetised needle and some good twine? Is that monofilament round the pencil, maybe use braided instead? How about a safety pin, always useful :)

I've used cigar tubes as containers since I traded my 8 year cigarette addiction for cigars about 4 or 5 years ago.
They've held:
Survival kits.
Ammo for slingshots and air rifles.
Tinder shavings to start fires.
Reeses pieces
Toothpicks
Dog treats, etc.
They've been very useful, but i try teaching my friends to use them and they always return the next day wanting another because someone crushed theirs or the dog chewed it up.

Good idea, but how will aluminum tubes hold-up to real carry over time? They are very thin, crush easily and the threading on the cap isn't the greatest.

Regarding your kit, how about just using a golf pencil, or half of a pencil? You don't need that much graphite or wood out in the wilderness and you free-up space for additional items like a razor blade, fire steel & hacksaw blade. If you can, find a cheap LED light that will fit the tube. That birthday candle won't last long, nor will it remain lit in even light wind.

:D

An aid to fire-lighting rather than illumination :)

When I was a kid I remember my grandfather showing me how to make a fishing ledger with a cut-down cigar tube. Can't remember exactly how, but it worked well, and I had the same one for years.

I think it's a great idea. Just pack it where it won't get crushed. If that's a problem, look for "baby soda bottles" also known as "tube vaults".
