Repurposing the serrated portion of a combo edge folder?

I'm not a big fan of combo edge blades but I recently received one in a trade. I was thinking of regrinding the serrated portion of the blade into a very shallow single bevel edge for fine work and sharpening the front of the blade to a more obtuse convex edge for heavy duty cutting. It would be somewhat similar to the edge of a Tom Brown Tracker or one of Strider's nightmare grinds.

Thoughts?

You'd be cutting a lot of steel off........
It might look alright though.
What's the knife you're modifying?

This one, maybe...

It doesn't look like it would take that much.

Looks like I can be done. Is leave it chisel ground though

That's the plan; leave the serrated portion as a single bevel. Unlike many production tantos, Benchmades are ground on both sides.

The good thing is, I don't like the as is anyway, so if it doesn't turn out well, I can always send it in for a drop point plain edge blade or $25.

Go for it!
This old work beater is 100% more useful after the mod.
I also added a ghetto wave that works perfectly.

What did you use to grind off the serrations? File? Grinder?

I used a belt sander but it doesn't take much to grind down the teeth.
Even by hand it should go pretty fast, depending on what you are using.

I don't think the transition from straight edge to serrations is similar at all compared to that CS knife.

Unless you grind down (up) the plain edge to meet the ground down serrations it'll be way off. That was the biggest problem with the Blur. Just look at the coating for evidence of what it might look like. Take a piece of tape and cover the serrations, then decide if you like that look.

I don't want the PE version ground down to meet the serrated part. I was thinking it would be something like this.

Riiight, that actually looks cool. Hell man, I say give it a shot. Like you said, worst case scenario you get it re-bladed. If you're not used to grinding hardened steel I'd start with a file.

If you do it please post pics.
