I require a knife similar to the Columbia River A.G. Russell Sting Knife, but balanced for throwing and rust-proof.

These are all the traits I want:

1. 3.5-4 inch blade. Overral 8-9 inch length
2. Balanced for throwing
3. Stainless steel (it's going into saltwater often)
4. Low profile hand grip (which should be easy if it's for throwing)
5. Double edged blade
6. fixed blade and preferably a single piece of steel
7. Upside down carry case like the Sting would be great too

Does anyone have any recommendations?

It's meant to be concealed for self defense, so it won't be used heavily but I would prefer the blade not snap in half.

Thanks

a knife that is going to be thrown needs to have softer steel so that it doesn't get damaged when throwing it. A steel like 420 series would probably be good but won't hold an edge very well. Do you want handle scales? I don't have any suggestions but I would probably get a throwing knife of your choice with metal handles and do a cord wrap and have a kydex sheath made for it.

On that note I don't think knives are the best defensive tool unless you have a lot of training. I also don't think throwing your only weapon away is a great idea.

You seem to be lost the mall is two blocks ahead on the left! Thanks bye!
Any ways, I'd recommend the Cold Steel Peacekeeper, only problem is that it isn't black, or serrated or tanto! :p

shinyhalo welcome to the forum. there is a section called practical --tactical which can be of more assistance. i sense you are new to knife throwing. perhaps you should check out this practice some more before making a blade decision.

+1.

if i was in a fight, i sure wouldn't be throwing a knife at anyone. what happens if you miss or don't get a perfect stick with the throw? you're giving away your weapon which can then be used against you.

I figured since the knife is going to have a low profile handle, it might as well be balanced for throwing in case I feel like doing something fun with it while camping.

I would not throw it at someone in self defense.

FlaMtnBkr's advice seems good. Any throwing knife recommendations?

Check out Cold Steels offerings. They seem to have a decent variety, and at decent prices (not sure what throwing knives are actually worth or what they go for).

Most throwing knives don't come sharpened FYI. It would probably not go well if you were caught with one either.

Buy throwing knives to have fun.

shinyhalo, we have a whole subforum for throwing knives, Knife Throwing & Throwing Knives. I will move this there.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Gotta agree here. Why throw away a perfectly knife,if you miss the bugger you threw it at is gunna use it against you.

You all seem to be assuming that someone can only have one knife on them. :)

Personally, I don't carry an arsenal of weapons around with me at all times because I don't expect to need them. I know it sounds ninja-tastic, but I can certainly think of several ways knife throwing could be an effective compliment to ones defensive choices.

Just think of having more than one knife on you, and leading your attack with a throw (of one or even multiple knives at one time) that with luck could severely injure your opponent right off the bat, but if nothing else would most likely cause them to flinch or duck, thus throwing them off ballance and leaving them open to attack with the weapon you should already be holding in your other hand.

I know, it may sound far fetched, and most people will say "just get a gun" but some people are not able to own a firearm.

Personally, I like a pepperspray and knife combo, but when I'm out hiking/camping I usually have a set of throwers on my side in adition to a couple large camp knives. And I'm pretty confident that I could use them to deadly effect if for some reason I ever needed to. :D

Although if you throw a knife at them and miss...then they have the knife. Then I'm sure it wouldn't look so bad if you pulled out the gun and finished the job.

I agree with everyone else, throwing knives aren't the best self defense tool. Get a gun or a boot knife maybe.

If you miss, how do they have the knife? -Since if you missed that means the knife has flown right passed them. :p

And as stated before, guns are simply not an option for some people, due to financial or legal restrictions.

If you miss the knife is closer to them than you eh? Who wouldn't step back a few feet and grab something to give you a HUGE edge no?

I guess I don't see it.

It either flies way past them, in which case they would have to travel and search for the knife. Meanwhile you could just leave.

If it hits them, but does not stick, it's still going to hurt, and they will likely be in the process of ducking, flinching, or trying to get the heck out of the way, meaning they are momentarily off ballance which gives you an opening to attack.

Same thing if they decide to try and dive for the knife that is on the ground, they will then be in an awkward possition, giving you that advantage once again.

....Keep in mind I am talking about facing someone who is less than 12 feet or 3 meters away.... the kind of distance you could close in a momment and be right on top of your adversary.

But of course the effectiveness of knife throwing tactics depends greatly on the dexterity and skill of the person doing the throwing! ;)

...And I know that the likelyhood of ever actually needing to resort to such violence is quite small. Just saying that there certainly are ways to make use of knife throwing in a defensive situation. :)

you would have to be totally retarded to want to use thrwoing knifes as a self defence weapon. Half the time you'll probally be lucky to get it to stick at a certain distance (seeing as your even asking this question) much less trying to hit a moving target.

The fact is that
1, your not in a movie
2, your not a ninja
and 3, you are just gonna hurt yourself. just run away and save yourself the pain and aggravation.
