After fighting another losing battle with the search function, I thought 'd just put this out as a request; after seeing the competition finish Hell Razor in the Blade '08 preview, I was curious what other Busse knives were offered in that style of finish?

If you have any pics saved please post em! It would be greatly appreciated! :D :D :D

Jerry has talked about it in the past, but I don't think it has ever been offered.

.

I vaguely recall reading a thread about that finish, but it was when I first joined - I was overwhelmed with information at that point, I hardly remembered it until he posted that pic!

I was under the impression that it was something offered a long time ago, well before I showed up. Guess not!

(Oh well - worth a try!)

Thanks for the heads up randucci.

The edge is wicked scary I am typing without the use of one digit cause the Hell Razor BIT ME

AGAIN!?! They need to keep you away for sharp edges.

"Here Amy, you just sit here and make nice on the phone with the customers. Please stay out of the shop."

:D

We've chatted about it before. Then he asked us about it (where the pics come from) ... BUT ... this is the first delivery!!

i've ordered knives from busse "plain". no finish. they have always been delivered black coated.

Hey - that Jack Hammer is the blade that goes with the Les Baer combo!

I'm indifferent. I can't believe the cost is that much less to not powder-coat the blade. But it does make it easier to beat on it - it's already pre-dinged. :)

I just like the way infi looks under the coating....I like the whorls and pits and whatnot....dunno why.

So competition finish means it comes stripped but does it also mean that the blade comes with a competition sharp edge? I see Amy has already done herself a mischief with these HRs but was wandering if the edges on these are representative of all competition finishes.

We don't worry a bit about finish, since the name of the game is performance. . . We usually take a blade straight from the furnace and do a light pass on a wheel and then it's all about the edge. . . .

It is difficult to put this type of edge on a regularly finished knife since the edge finishing process usually rides up fairly high on the bevel. . . .Very cool!!!

We leave behind all of the peen marks, INFI dimples, and anything else that might be there. Sometimes we double cut them before edging. . .sometimes we don't. There is no set criteria as to how ugly these blades can get. . . .

Handles can be a bit rough as well. . . .fit and finish? . . . Uh, probably not gonna find it here kids.

These are beaters of the first degree. . . You'll never have to worry about marring up the finish. . . because we've already done that for you!

from how I understand it, the blades will skip over the majority of the fit and finish stage, including getting out the major pittings, grind marks, and unevenness that may be left after the heat treat, and concentrate mostly on getting the edge down to a zero convex. it will be very, very ugly and full of fit and finish problems, but it will be usable and with a very thin edge.

Busse and thin edge are two things that normally don't go together.

For example, the SAR-5 is a convex grind (convex sabre?) but the factory edge is still pretty beefy. The thinnest factory Busse edges I have seen are on the Boney AD and 1/300 SHBM.

I don't think these competition finish blades will have thin edges, just a convex zero edge that's quite sharp. They will probably still be thick enough to take a huge beating without permanent damage.

Back in 2002 I ordered an Assault Shaker with no coating. Not satin, just combat grade with no coating. Jerry actually got on the phone and talked me into a Double Cut flats with the spine and 'inside of the handle' holes coated black. This was before any DC blades were offered. It's the only Busse I've ever seen like this.

In my mind I'd like to think I may have planted the seed for 'competition grade' knives!:p
