Request - Mini Benchmade Bone Collector shot vs. anything else?

Folks,

I am seriously considering the mini Bone Collector - it'll be my first Benchmade. My interest was piqued having been shopping with a friend of mine who subsequently ended up buying the full size Griptillian with the modified sheep's foot blade shape.

I have to admit, whilst I pushed the Para-2 under his nose (amongst others) the axis lock allowed him quick and easy deployment straight out of the box and it certainly opened with authority.

I much prefer smaller folders for EDC and if the need arises for anything more serious, I typically reach for a circa 4.0" fixed blade knife so...

...I am officially interested in small'ish axis lock folders and because I hate plastic and all it's variations the walnut mini B.C. aroused my interest (otherwise, I'd look at the regular and Ritter mini-Grips - I considered aftermarket slabs but the total cost is significantly highter that the Mini BC - i.e. 2-3 x!!). D2 is a plus in my book (although I know many of you dislike it's lack of razor edge holding - for me it is a preference over 154).

What I need to wrap my head around is it's actual size, in the hand, in comparison to any regular knife; ZT0350, Ontario RAT-1, Spydies of all kinds, etc. Can anyone help with comparison pics? (and yes I have searched and Googled this extensively....)

Thanks folks!

Ben

The mini Bone Collector has a smaller handle than the Rat-1. The BC fit my hand beautifully, but I sold the Rat-1 because it was too large. The ertgos on the Benchmade are also excellent.

Thanks ASBOB,

I also have a RAT-1 as my beater but that handle is huge for me. More than enough real-estate for me...

Cheers for the heads-up on the good ergos on the Mini BC,

Ben

The BONE COLLECTOR 15020-2 is on my ebay wish list. but I just got a Sypderco PM 2 and a Buck 337 Paradigm in the last month so I have to wait a while. its probably next on my list

sorry no pics but i think the bone collector is an amazing knife, it's the ultimate griptilian. the handle feels so much nicer. i have a large grip and after i got small bone collector the griptilian feels cheap.

Thanks ericvar101 - it does seem that your folder money has been spent (this month at least!)

Keyman, appreciate the classy pic. Thanks. Likewise Liquidm1980, I appreciate your experiences with this knife.

Thanks guys...

Ben

Here is my BM 15030-2 walnut handled mini-BC in walnut between my small plain Sebbie and my ZT-0301 moose-of-a-knife:

Here it is with my large BC, BM #15020-1:

The skull puts me off, otherwise the mini-BC would get more carry here. My wife gave it to me for Christmas 2010 - and loved it. I had her one from my local enabler's next delivery within the month. It's in her purse. The regular BC looks and feels decidely larger. Both are keepers - and came sharp, too... fortunately, as, if my BM 710(D2) is any indicator, resharpening D2 with a Sharpmaker may take a while!

Stainz,

Thanks so much for the comparison shots - just what I was after. Would you say that the full- sized version is comparable to the ZT0301?

Cheers!

Ben

The mini bone collector is one of Benchmade's most underrated knives ever. I totally dig the walnut handled version and that fact it has BM's excellent D2 makes the deal almost perfect. If you don't mind an opening hole, it's a better knife than the standard fare Mini-Grip. My local B&M has a limited to 500 numbered version they claim, but I haven't seen it out of the case ever.

+1000 on this. It's super comfortable (curves in the right places and hand-filling without being huge in the pocket), grippy but not rough, great blade/handle ratio.... I really don't think it has any negative features.

Here's a pic next to some Spydies. I have a few others I could put it next to if you give me a list of yours

Kreole,

You Sir are a Gentleman - I can't see the Spydie pic you tried to post but my folders are as follows;

UKPK (any blade shape) Para 2, Junior, Delica or Dragonfly or ZT0350, ZT0200, Ontario RAT-1, Falkniven TK3, GEC Scout or my latest DPX Hest 2.0

Any one of of them would do for further comparison...

No rush, I'll just keep checking in. Thanks again!

Ben

I found the Mini Grip to just be a little too small and sold it. The Mini Bone Collector is just right (why do I feel like Goldilocks?).

The one problem I had with the Mini BC was the blade, which I never liked. I had someone swap it out with another Benchmade blade (I think from the Mini Presidio but I'd have to check) and it was perfect. This negates the warranty however.

Another really, really good knife this size is the Al Mar Mini Sere. I highly recommend it.

I believe what you have there is what some call a Bonesidio, the best of two knives.
Here's mine ;)

The mini Bone Collector has been with me for over a year and is one of my favorite folders of all time. I dug through my Photobucket and found only this one in hand shot (Next to a mini A100) I have large hands and the mini works great for me.
