I am intrested in the quality of cold steels 1796 light cavalry saber, is it any good, and if not is their a better one out there at a similar price? I am also curious on "fighting with the saber and cutlass". Pros and cons on it if anybody is familiar with it.

Thanks, Cutlass

I own the CS version of your forum name and am extremely impressed with its quality. I did get it in a trade and don't know what they sell for normally but I have found it to be a solid well built sword with a good blade capable of taking a good edge. I have never handled an original 1917 cutlass so I don't know how accurate the balance and weight are (balance is the only thing I have heard criticized in this CS sword) but I find it acceptable and controllable. I have not done any serious cutting with it but its hell on bannana trees and I have had great fun working with it. I would guess that a similiar piece like the cavlry saber would be well built and functional and frankly now that I have the one I can hear other pieces in the line calling me, especially the talwar.

Let us know if ya get one.

I've found the overall quality of the CS Light Cavalry saber to be pretty good - handled and seen a few specimens. In terms of handling they cut really well if you do your bit, but you will need big hands since Lynn Thompson seems to have decided to "up scale" the size of it compared to original 1796 sabers I have seen. The grip is much larger and wider, as is the blade.

It is about the only decent sharp repro of the 1796 that I know about so if you're interested in the style, buy it!

Edgetrip, i too own the 1917cutlass, i had gotten it as a gift a couple of days before i began to come to the forums. I too love my sword, but in all honesty its not the balance i have a problem with, it is the weight compaired to original cutlasses i have handled. This one is a bit heavier than the originals by about 4-12 ounces depending on the original. Thanks Daniel L, you have finally made up my mind, the next time i come across a deal with the saber i will be sure to pick one up. I do have fairly large hands for a person so i should be able to adjust.

Thanks,

Cutlass
