The Rodent 9 has been tempting me for weeks now, but I keep holding off for a couple of reasons:
1) inability to generate an appropriate justification to assuage spouse's wrath (and the accompanying guilt)
2) my other rats have all arrived with edges much thicker than I personally prefer, built more for durability than cutting performance. I have reprofiled all, mostly be hand, down to 30-inclusive, and that takes awhile with SR101 at 60 Rc... on a 9" blade, that's a LOT of time . I do have a 1x30 belt-sander w/ high-grit low micron belts, so I can complete the work faster (with less precision to edge angle), but... why pay +$200 for a knife requiring so much work to get as I want it? I already know the reasons I would still do it, but it gives me pause.

So, does anyone have calipers and can post a measurement of the Rodent 9's thickness at the bevel shoulder, i.e. where the bare edge meets the blade-coating? I've read that a commonly compared knife (Junglas) is 0.05" behind the edge, and that's 1095 at 56-57Rc. I generally take the added cost of rats for superior materials, design and ergonomy (the 9 certainly appears to have those over the Junglas), and that should translate to superior performance as well. Who can help elucidate all of this for me? Measurements, anecdotes, and esp. pics appreciated!

Nothing yet...

Can anyone point me to a picture comparison between the Junglas and Rodent 9? Someone out there must own both...

As it measures ,050 give or take a rch up and down the blade. That is on a untouched r9.

I reprofiled my R9 to 20 degrees per side:

Behind the edge it now measures 1.84 mm:

I reprofiled my R9 to 20 degrees per side...

Thanks for the measurements, all. I still can't figure out what the factory edge angle is by those, given the convex grind. The R9's primary bevel with require a steeper angle to match the Junglas' thickness at the edge given the difference in blade widths and spine thickness, giving the Junglas superior cutting geometry. But the R9's designs is much more appealing to me. I wonder if there are any rats in south-central WI...

Jenslkl, that's a beautiful edge  Did you do it by hand or on a belt? And how long did it take you?
